Some Slam Poetry, inspired equally by the Flobots song No Handlebars and Turiya Autry.
Left, Right

"Keep on burning through the days

Don't you stop for anything

The flowers will smell just the same

You'll have time when old and grey

Life was given to be spent

Be loud and proud and violent

Life was given to be used

Don't you dare speak of abuse

This is how we are today

This has always been the way

Why this is how you should be

Don't look elsewhere, look at me

I'm your idol, I'm your god

You'll spoil that child if you spare the rod

You don't have time to stop and think

And if you don't swim, you'll damn well sink!"

Sorry, sir, I'm done with this

What you call life is emptiness

I'll throw your shackles off of me

I'll fight the battles 'til I break free

But go ahead and ramble on

Someone will listen, just as long

As what you say offers them

Something on which they can depend

You can give them stability

But I will choose this futility

I will choose to take the road

Less traveled by your mindless drones

I will burn the bridges down

Blow the dams and flood your town

I will break the cages open

I will speak for the soft-spoken

Your factory age is at an end

Give it up my greedy friend

Your regulated shift-work life

Is done with now, we've heard the lies

And better yet, we know the truth

We've found it in our reckless youth

Yeah we have found a brand new way

We don't give a damn for what you say

We will stay up through the night

Waiting for the dawn's first light

To listen to the song birds' calls

And bathe beneath the icy falls

We'll travel far and weave tall tales

When your perfect system finally fails

We will keep on keeping on

We will keep on singing songs

Your time will be dark memories

A warning for our young to heed

To keep them from complacency

To keep them planting fertile seeds

Of that fiery spirit, humanity

Thanks for your time, we appreciate

All the reasons you gave us to hate

The way that you would have us be

This new and improved slavery

We're grateful, truly, let us shake your hand

Before we erase you from this land

If not for you, we would be lost

If not for your spiritual holocaust

For happiness can only spring

From that dead feeling that you bring

Without one the other dies

So we'll keep our truth, you take your lies

With you to your barren grave

Hear me now, world of today

You can scream and fight and bomb

But we will lead our soldiers on

Soon you'll see that victory

Can't be achieved with weaponry

Our army of mind and voice and heart

Will burst upon you like a dying star

And as the supernova fills the sky

We'll wish you well, with our battle cry

Heard in heaven, and the bowels of hell

Where the angels and the demons dwell

And these immortals will share your surprise

As they comprehend for the first time

The majesty of humanity

The beauty of our mortality

And when at last our march is done

You'll realize that your race is run.

Dormant

Why stay up to watch late night TV

Why stay up without accomplishing

Anything

That will further me

Without working towards

My just rewards

Not sure why

But I know that I

Will stay up

Anyway

Stay up late, sleep through the day

Watching, waiting just to see

If anything will come to me

I can't move to take it now

I'd charge forward, but somehow

I can't seem to get control

All I do is ride the flow

Working hard to work some more

Chipping away at the my very core

Cause I can't deny that I ignore

All the things I have in store

I can read and write and rhyme

I can bend the laws of time

I can see without a light

I can speak without a lie

I can do all this and more

Learning from the classic lore

While atrophying more and more

But don’t think that I can’t wipe the floor

With your face if you cause me grief

Yes I can steal from any thief

I can unleash anarchy

I can rule a monarchy

I can unite democracy

But I still can't let me be me

Instead I sit and instead I wait

For fate to bring me love or hate

I'll bide my time until the day

That life will let me come awake

I'll bide my time until the day

That life will let me start to create

Something that will rock the world

Shock the boys

Entrance the girls

Spin the earth

Like a top

Break the boundaries

Cement the blocks

Into something never seen

A new form of creativity

Carve my name into the moon

Write it in the spiraling stars

What once was theirs will become ours

Walk right through the walls of time

Live through history in its prime

Fight through battles in dark ages

Raise a spirit with ancient mages

Court the queens, drink with kings

Walk with Dante through hell's rings

Find old Jack and climb the beans

Sleep in Eden, all alone

As Adam and his lovely bride

Realize how love can die

Blaze a trail no one can follow

Drink with rebels, fight with honor

Until back I'll come to the present day

With new wisdom, new things to say

Speak to the masses but never preach

They’re free to learn but I’ll never teach

Experience is the only law

All other rules are human flaws

Pull society from the jaws

Of corrupt tyrants and corporate dogs

Raze the towers, burn the walls

United we would make them fall

United I know we could stall

The unstoppable decline of the human mind

If we revealed their brutal lies

If we stopped the clocks, forgot the time

We’d lay with lovers all our lives

Lay with friendship on all sides

Feel the sun through tight-closed eyes

Grow the grapes and make the wine

Bring out the best in all mankind

Until I can do this I'll take life in stride

Make the moments, live my lies

Grasp the ends of these threads

Remind myself that I'm not dead

Remember that no matter what

I still live and I still love

I still stare into the great above

To question why stars seem to shine

With intensity to outmatch sunlight

Question why we live in loops

While each day should bring something new

I'll find my voice upon the roof

Shout my words, embrace ridicule

Laugh it off and keep it up

Watch out for me, once I've had enough

Watch out for me, when I make a change

I promise you, things won’t be the same.
