A hand-picked collection of my contemporary poetry from 2007. |
This is my first poetry compendium, made up of poetry I wrote during 2007, and during my last year at university - most of it is philosophical, ALL of it is form-challenging - this was the first time I'd strayed away from traditional technique, and explored one of my all-time loves, modern philosophy, through a series of very different pieces. The poems in this collection are extremely experimental - 2007 was a year I spent creating bizarre, colloquial pieces built on philosophy, ideology and my thoughts about public opinion - and it shows, here. Many of the poems are written in Northern English dialect, which is incredibly interesting to write and read - others are Larkinesque in their anarchistic moroseness, some I would wager are even unreadable to some. Regardless, these poems represent a time of high experimentation for me, and there isn't one in this collection which doesn't carry a piece of me with it. I have no doubt whatsoever that my 2008 book will read very differently. Included are 'In Too Deep', a fumbling, socially-awkward love projection (which raised a few eyebrows at more than one poetry reading!), 'Dinner With Nietzsche', a scatching political analysis of the universe as we know it, 'S Replies', a prompt-driven rant from the most celestial of bodies; 'Arbitrary Moons', a piece of contemplation that seems unsure of itself; 'Stuck Between a Twinge in The Wrist and THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE', an inter-textual analysis of poetry-writing; '?', an analysis of the fallacies in human curiosity; 'Ringo and Bess', a brutal snapshot of domestic hell; and my personal favourite, 'Aliens', which is a crass, but defiant rant at Western greed. WARNING : There is a LOT of vulgar language in the following poems; so if you're averse to that sort of thing, please read no further! Sit back... and enjoy. I'm going to write a commentary up to include at the start of the poems below once I've got the roster filled. All comments, critiques, feelings - all very welcome. Fire away! Keep on truckin', ~Gray |
