Bodice/Torso items breakdown from my Clothing/Materials (full list)
This is my Bodice/Torso items sub-list from my "Clothing/Materials Reference (Full List)Open in new Window.. The intention of this list is as a creative writing reference, but if it helps for other projects, that's ok, too.

Breaking this list out of the main list should make it easier to search for items under the identified topic only. Other clothing/materials items should be referenced from the main list or from their individual breakdown category. This list is comprehensive, but also incomplete. (Reference sites at the end.)

Armor is not the focus here, but there are a few pieces listed.


Bodice/Torso items (non-cape, leggings, skirt, kilt)

- Abaya – (Muslim) a woman's outer garment, long-sleeved, floor-length, usually black, worn with a hajib (headscarf) or veil (niqab).
- Banyan – [circa 18th century] T-shaped kimono-like dressing-gown or informal coat worn over the shirt and breeches
- Beaded dress – (Egypt) an open-weave (net) dress of stringed beads worn by Egyptian women
- Bella Abita – [circa 1400] stylish outer dress
- Bliaut – [circa 12th century] a woman's outer garment
- Bodice – covering for the torso, usually considered for female use
- Brassière – (French) a baby's vest
- Brigandine – canvas or leather torso armor piece normally worn over a gambeson
- Calarsiris (or kalasiris) – (Egypt) robes worn by both sexes in ancient Egypt (name given by Herodotus), might cover one or both shoulders in shoulder straps
- Chador – (Muslim) an outer garment worn by women covering her from head to toe, leaving only her hands and part or all of her face visible; similar to a khimar.
- Chalmys – (Greek, Roman, Egyptian) rectangular, short draped robe worn over one shoulder by young men and travelers
- Chiton – (Greek) an all-over rectangular garment wrapped around the body from right side to right side draped and pinned at the shoulder, waist or hips
- Choli – (Hindu) midriff blouse worn by women
- Cotehardie – a shouldered or shoulderless woman's outer garment; female surcoat
- Dress
- Dressing gown
- Dupatta – (Hindu) scarf long enough to wear draped over the head along the body
- Fichu – [circa 18th century] square kerchief worn across the breastbone (sheer or opaque) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichu
- Galabiyeh – (Muslim) women's blouse
- Gambeson – padded defensive jacket normally worn beneath a brigandine
- Ghagra – (Hindu) female bridal attire

- Habit
- Hijab – (Muslim) a dress code; modesty rules vary, typically seen is a covering (often black) from head to toe, hiding most of the face and the arms to the wrists. The intent is to not attract sexual attention.
- Houppelande – a long outer garment with long flowing sleeves worn by both men and women in the late Medieval period
- Kaftan – (also caftan) (Muslim) neck-to-floor length robe-like garment

- Kimono – (Japanese) outer robe
- Jubbah (Muslim countries) [circa 1540-50] a long outer garment with long sleeves
- Lehanga – (Hindu) wedding dress
- Peplos – (Greek) tubular, body length garment draped inside out form the top about half-way down and gathered at the waist worn by women before 500BC (seen on the Caryatid columns)
- Pocardium – Greek for the Egyptian sheathdress
- Robe
- Sari – (Hindu) a strip of unstitched cloth, "ranging from four to nine meters in length that is draped over the body in various styles. The most common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder baring the midriff." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sari
- Scarf – cloth covering for head or body (i.e. shoulders or hips)
- Sheath – (Egyptian) a style of tubular dress
- Sheathdress (also pocardium) – body-fitting wrapped sheath dress with or without shoulder strap(s)
- Shirt (see "shirt" for types)
- Smock-frock – [circa 18th century] made of heavy linen or wool, outer garment worn by rural English and in Wales
- Stola – (Roman) women's long pleated dress worn over the tunic, corresponding to a toga
- Sundress
- Surcoat
- Toga – worn by men – women wearing them = prostitution (many types – see http://www.vroma.org/~bmcmanus/clothing.html )
- Tube – style of straight length dress or top
- Tunic
- Tunica – (Roman) woman's dress borrowed from the Greek Chiton
- Veil – sheer, lacy, embroidered, or opaque cloth worn over the face, head (or both), sometimes body
- Vest
- Wrap
- Yukata – (Japanese) "bath robe" or "bath clothing" worn by women
