The gray sunlight
wakes me—
with the drumming
on the rooftop.
I could be
disappointed
for my picnic—
or happy
for my dry garden.
But I pause,
and listen
to the rain drumming,
and tapping a smooth,
soothing rhythm
on the rooftop.
And as I listen
to the birds in the rain,
still choosing to chirp,
I wonder—
as I fall
back to sleep—
Will I begin to awaken?
