We spent the day together. We drove to the country. The tires first singing on the asphalt, then crunching on the dirt and rocks of the back roads.
Way back to the old run down barns that I love so much; We shared secret smiles while listening to all our favorite classic rock songs. The Eagles, Bob Segar and Cheep Trick setting the mood of the day. You sat in the seat beside me, my constant passenger, my oldest friend, the love of my life.
We drove to my favorite park and held hands while we talked about our hopes and dreams. remembering special times we shared and looked to the future. "The Boys are getting so big" I said. We spent time wondering about what kind of men they will turn out to be. The wind whispered in the trees and the air smelt of rain. "This is my home" I thought and my mind filled with peace.
It was getting dark, so I headed home. As I pulled into the driveway, I looked over at you and you disappeared. "Goodbye my old friend" I whispered as I tucked your memory back inside my heart. I got out of the car feeling older and sad, all the way to my soul.
