Chapter two. Enjoy =) |
Doubt should not have been something I still had so much of, not since my entire childhood was jam packed with my Father telling me of the existence of monsters that most people didn't believe in. However, I still doubted that anything could be on the ceiling as I looked up as my Father had instructed me to do. I only looked up to please him, who was still chanting the word "up". I felt like a rotten person; I wanted so desperately for him to just shut up. His voice was so awful to listen to now, so dry, weak and forced; it was hard to believe that this voice was the same of the smooth talking Paranormal investigator who because of his charisma skills made it onto a few Talk shows. I looked up and was greeted with a sight I did not expect to see; a man, or rather a thing, on the ceiling. He was on the ceiling, not holding on tight to stay up like a human would, but he was up there without any difficulty. He was on all fours and was perched up there in a way reminiscent of a mosquito. His gold eyes had been on me the whole time; I just knew it. Those eyes were the first thing I noticed. The things expression was a big, evil smile. I was paralyzed and my mind was racing. 'Oh God, oh God. What do I do?! Do I leave Dad here? I couldn't; he's my responsibility. But, what is the point of us to both die? Oh God, oh God. . .' "Taylor," The thing on the ceiling said in a mock form of fondness. "I wondered when I'd be seeing you. Or rather, you'd be seeing me," "Who are you?" I asked as I slowly got to my feet. I was petrified and my mind was going a million miles an hour; how was I managing words out so calmly and clearly? Must be a trait from Dad. The thing didn't answer. His smile grew larger. His face was perfect instead of skin he had a pore less material that was pure beauty. The only lines one his face came from his little smile, which even then were very shallow lines. 'A real Vampire. . .' I thought. How many times had Dad come home from his day at work and talked about Vampire's? Quite a few, they seemed to be his favorite of all "monsters". "Tay, they're the most interesting creatures," My Father would always say of them, "So much like us; so much like us that they were once us exactly. But they're the most horrid creatures," "Why, Daddy?" I remember asking. " Tay, they're so horrible they can't even get along with their own kind," Yes, I had heard of Vampires over and over again over the years. But I had never seen them in person, only heard the myths. This Vampire in my Father's room was like the answer to all of my old teenage prayers. How many times had I romanticized Vampires growing up? How many times had I laid alone in bed at night and wished for a handsome Vampire to sweep me away from all of the average human dullness? "I don't think that matters much, Miss," The Vampire said to me as he crawled across the white washed ceiling with incredible ease, the ease that you or I would have crawling across a floor. "Why not?" I asked, my voice somehow not even shaking once, which still surprised me. "Because," He started. He had crawled across the ceiling and now was crawling down the wall and towards the floor with the same ease. "You're about to be my dinner, and I don't think my dinner needs my name, do you?" I looked at him for a moment. I was going to die? That didn't seem possible somehow. I was only twenty one, and I felt like I had a millennia to live out still. The thought of my death this night hadn't occurred to me really, which looking back seems ridiculous. That feels like it should have been the first thing I had worried about. No, I hadn't thought I would die until he said I would become his dinner. I had been more worried about becoming maimed or my Father getting killed, but not me. . . "You look confused," The Vampire said. He was talking slowly to make me feel stupid, I'm sure. He was now on his feet. He was tall and had an elegant frame, but he was so terrifying that I didn't even think of his beauty at the time. "Your Father nearly exploited everything we are," The Vampire said with gritted teeth, he had gone from calm and collected to angry within the span of a second. In the blink of an eye the Vampire was nose to nose with me. He had moved a startling speed. So fast that I hadn't so much as seen him shift. A shiver went down my spine. I had always known creatures like Vampires existed, but I had never been close to any of the monsters. They seemed a lot nicer in a stories. I then surprised myself again, but in a less admirable way, by darting out of the room and slamming the door behind me. If I had thought for so much as a second I would have thought that he could easily catch me. Or that he had a companion outside of the room, waiting for him. One of the things my Father had told me was that, since Vampires did live an eternity and they didn't tend to get along with other Vampires so well, they made companions for themselves. They would pick a human they theoretically "loved" and would make them one and voila, they would have a friend and confidant for however long the relationship could last. I was lucky, somehow, and there was nothing to get me in the living room. Or at least I didn't see anything. The thought of the companion had stuck me as soon as I left my Father's room. "Taylor, my dear girl, I want you to listen right now. I want you to hear me break your Father's old skin and drink what life is left in him, I want you to hear it," The Vampire said from behind the door in a taunting tone. I almost shouted "no", but bit on the side of my hand. I had to get out of here, but in my panic I couldn't even move. I heard my Father moan; his moan was a terrible sound, it sounded like a dying animal. It was so full of pain and sadness. Before I could hear anymore of my Father's death, someone grabbed my upper arm and pulled me out of the small living room and into the kitchen and then outside. I was frozen from hearing my Father's supposed passing and didn't fight them for a second. My Father, the amazing, the great, the timeless Rhett Bellerose was dead. |
