That morning started out prime,
sun shining, a breeze just right,
all that stopped on a dime
when that fateful letter arrived.
The man held the envelope shaking,
he knew what was within,
oh the smile that he was faking
his day had come, his number was called.
The missus walked in and froze,
"Baby what's wrong?" she asked,
"I'm going," he said as a tear dashed past his nose
she broke down as the baby began to cry.
Days came and went too swiftly for him,
as he attempted to be strong,
numerous moments dim
he boarded the train with sorrow and wonderment.
He wrote them everyday,
tears always in his eyes because he knew what he was missing,
she stood by the mailbox constantly that May
she waited for weeks with not a single note from her brave soldier.
Hope she always kept,
up until that final morning,
a knock at the door, she opened and wept
that brave soldier of hers was gone.
