Unhappy and alone a girl passes into the night.
She leans over the edge of the lake,
Her body heaves with every gasp of breath,
Her eyes once hazel, green and alive are now dull and gray,
They roll back into her head,
She is nearly exhausted herself from breathing so hard,
Her hair falls in her face and her legs give out from under her,
The moonlight illuminates and sparkles off of the silent lake.
She looks down at her reflection and lets out a gruesome, rattling cough,
All the while grasping the silver cross she always wears around her neck,
Her fingers tears away at the clasp keeping the cross tied,
She rips the entire necklace off of her neck and away from her beating heart,
With her last final surge of energy she hurls the cross into the lake,
God never did anything for her anyway,
She let’s out another rasping cough, this time so violent she can feel something inside of her rupturing,
Making her seem even weaker,
When she looks down at her reflection again she can see a line of blood crawling down from the corner of her lip,
More begins to drip down to the bottom of her chin,
A drop of red falls into the lake,
The water ripples and glitters away where the drop fell,
And from the spot a creature, a creature with crimson wings takes shape,
For every drop of blood lost one of these creatures comes to life,
She stops coughing,
Her arms give out from under her and she collapses,
Her chest stops moving up and down,
Her breathing shortens then stops,
She looks at her hand,
Her skin is a sickly, pale white,
She touches her mouth and stains her fingers red,
A tears runs down her face from her sallow, gray eyes,
Then her eyes glaze over and stop seeing,
They roll back into her head for one final time,
All of the little crimson wings take flight around her head,
As if they were celebrating,
To them she just went to sleep and never woke up.
