Another video game review. |
Developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios, Age of Mythology is a real-time strategy (RTS) game based on mythology, rather than history. In other words, it’s a computer game in which a player builds up a civilization and an army to conquer an enemy nation. Improving and developing your civilization is based on worshiping gods from ancient Greek, Egyptian and Norse cultures. With enough favor from the gods, you will be granted myth creatures with which to fight and god powers to use against your enemies. The concepts in Age of Mythology that set it apart from other RTS titles are the mythology aspects. The major differences include worshiping gods, collecting favor, building temples, training myth units, and fighting with extra-powerful heroes, such as Hercules and Odysseus. Those are the things that make the game more addictive and fun than a traditional RTS game. With nine different major gods and countless minor gods to choose from, the possibilities are endless, allowing a new experience every time I play. In addition, the classic RTS formula works, as usual. Along with expected random map missions, Age of Mythology has an extensive campaign. It includes 32 distinct missions, each accompanied by cut-scenes that tie the whole story together. The campaign finds the hero, Arkantos of Atlantis, working against a giant Cyclops who wishes to unleash the titan Kronos on the world. This apparently spells mankind’s ultimate doom. Though it’s rather long, the campaign is incredibly enjoyable. There’s a variety of fun missions and the story draws you into the fantasy world of Age of Mythology really well. Overall, Age of Mythology is a well-polished game. My complaints are few and far between. I give it a 9.5/10. |
