I taught my dog to chase... he never learned to bring.
My Ex-Dog Blue

I had myself an old dog, Blue. He’d chase anything.
He learned to chase a stick but he never learned to bring.
He’d gladly chase a ball but he’d never bring it back.
I’d run all day to catch him; he’d never give me slack.

I swear that dog would laugh at me as I chased him around.
He'd come and drool on my face as I lay on the ground
out of breath and out of sorts.  He’d really get me mad.
I vowed I get him one day. Oh, I wanted that so bad.

My chance came in the fall. We were down by the lake.
I had his favorite toy.  A duck – though it looked fake.
Sitting just off shore, a real duck swimming there
but Blue was focused on his toy so he was unaware.

Now my plan was simple. I’d pretend to throw the toy.
He’d jump in the water and the duck would get annoyed.
He’d probably fly away but Blue might get a bite
on his nose or ear.  That would be alright.

I made a big pretense and had old Blue right tricked
as he jumped in the water but I failed to predict
that the stupid duck wouldn’t fly away.
He took off swimming with Blue nipping at his spray.

The last I saw of Blue, he was heading across the lake
until I couldn’t see him anymore, I could only see his wake.
I put up a few “Missing” signs that I made on my printer.
But I think the duck and Blue are both heading south for winter.
