Poem of a girl I loved but couldn't be with bc of our separate lives in Italy and the US.
The first moment I saw you, your eyes paralyzed me,
That day on the beach you came into my life.
So shy, so soft-spoken, so sweet you were that day we’d meet,
My heart felt as if it were cut by a knife.

Your stare was too much to bear those nights we would be on the beach,
I, wanting your lips for comfort, instead of that sweet vodka peach.
I remember those nights we would catch each other’s gaze,
The feelings, swimming in vodka, lost and confused, as if in a maze.

As we took that walk many days after our first,
I, never lacking words, found my lips pursed.
You understood and to me came close,
Your touch was warmer than all other girl’s most.

Under that monument we ended our walk,
I knew I had better talk.
You smiled at me and drew me near,
And I had no more fear, your lips as soft as cashmere.

As the short weeks passed we fell further in love,
Always together, like two mating doves.
I spoke of coming to Rome in the fall,
And you promised me every week you would call.

But the time came when you had to leave,
Leaving our love lost in the summer breeze.
We told each other we would call and write,
I sincerely hoped so with all my might.

We spent that last day by the Adriatic shore in each other’s arms,
Kissing all the day until the sun went away.
I gave you one final kiss before you made your leave,
Leaving me there with my vodka to grieve.

As the months passed and summer turned to fall,
I decided I would give you a call.
You were happy to hear from me, and I of you,
As we bid each other ado.

That was the last time your voice I would hear,
But in my heart I will always hold you dear.
Our love was a victim of our lives,
All I can do is let go, move forward, and survive.
