Susan wakes up, finally. Flash Fiction Contest Entry |
Susan woke up next to her husband. She touched his face. "I love you", she whispered. He opened his eyes, smiled and pulled her close. "It's 7:00." Susan rose from the bed and shut off the alarm. Ben, her husband, said, "Ten more minutes?" Susan giggled and tickled him. "Get up! I've got to get the kids out of bed". "Okay, kids, get up!" Moments later, 15-year-old Lisa and 13-year-old Sean trotted down the stairs, smiling. "Mornin' Mom" Sean kissed his mother and set about getting his lunch together. Lisa said "Hey Mom, how can I help?" Susan looked at her two children and her heart almost burst. Ben came down and said "Honey, I'd better go, the doctors are having a meeting." She was so proud of him. . . . Susan woke up. She was in a hospital bed. She looked around. "Hello?" she rasped. A nurse ran in. "Mrs. Larkin, you're awake!" "Why am I here? Where is my family?" The nurse patted her on her arm and took her vitals. "Not so fast. You shouldn't get your heart rate up. We'll call your family and let them know that you've regained consciousness." Her family arrived. Ben looked like he had just got up, thinning hair tousled and a stain on his paunchy stomach. The kids were fighting. "Shut up, you idiot!" Lisa punched her brother. "Oh, ow, I'm dying" Sean egged her on. They didn't even look at their mother. Ben mumbled, "Well Sue, welcome back." He had a guilty look on his face. It all came back! Ben had told her that he was having an affair! She tried to punch him, tripped, and fell off the trailer's porch . . . . Susan called for the doctor. "Excuse me, would it be any trouble to put me back to sleep?" Word count 299 |
