A review of "The Miracle Of Alvito And Other Stories" by David H Brandin |
Yes! You’ve Got It! Dave Brandin was a few minutes late for our arranged online chat about his latest book – because he’d popped out early for cigars! In fact I’ve told him I consider Illegals - which first appeared last year in Cigar Magazine and whose plot I won’t be mean enough to detail here – would make a better title piece than the present one for this collection of short tales*. Readers will recall Brandin as the author of the strangely exciting The Horns of Moses, whose premise was based on ageing Jewish suicide bombers taking revenge for terrorists acts against Israel. Several stories here are similarly fantastic while others like The Miracle Of Alvito and Tiger are based loosely on the truth. But as Brandin is a maths whiz and computer scientist, it’s no surprise that stories like A Sure Thing and Coolidge Said, which use his technological expertise, probably work best. I’ve got to know Brandin quite well online during the past 12 months so I feel comfortable in saying that his undeniably enthusiastic if masculine gung ho approach to life shines through these stories and makes them all the more rewarding for that. * The Miracle Of Alvito And Other Stories is published by Xlibris in both hardback and soft cover.
