an everyday reality
I hear the sirens again
and listen to the raindrops
against the window, knowing
it's always worse when it rains.

I close my eyes and picture
you in the downpour, steadily
approaching a mangled car.
Sadly, the life inside is gone.

I drift off to sleep again and
dream of death and angels
moving swiftly on the streets.
These angels share the burden.

I awake to silence and
feel you lying next to me
breathing evenly in and out.
You won't sleep at all tonight.

I reach through the darkness
and tenderly kiss your
swollen eyes, knowing
it's always worse when it rains.
