The Pope's Shorts

The Pope's Shorts

What kind of shorts
Does the Pope, holding court
In the Vatican,
Choose for his undies?
Are they boxers or briefs?
What's he got underneath?
I hope he wears
Clean ones on Sundays.
If he does, are they cotton?
Are they flannel or rayon?
Or maybe its satin
He sits on,
Embroidered with pictures,
Religious, or mixtures
Of parables, gospels
Or scriptures.
They could be like a clown's
So they keep falling down,
Round his ankles
And drag on the ground.
Are they in good repair?
Are they subject to wear?
Do they bunch up
And creep up his rear?
It would be quite alarming,
While children are starving,
To find that they're sown
With gold thread.
If he'd just use his head
He could sell them instead,
And, perhaps, there'd be
One more child fed.
