just some personal thoughts on the ancient emotion |
Love is perhaps the most overwritten and over produced feeling in the infinite spectrum of human emotion. One begins to wonder after reading through so many a poem and sonnet and novel and lyric and every other means of communication whether or not love is simply a by product of hormonal teens. Year after year more and more love novels and films arise from seemingly nowhere, each telling the same story with different words and different scenery. Is there a way to put love into words? Is there honestly a way to express that which is the most celebrated of all human conditions? After recent books such as twilight we begin to truly wonder. No in this humble writers opinion love cannot be conveyed through the written or spoken word no matter how eloquent the speaker. Love it seems has become watered down by modern stereotypes and expectations that it is hard to find it. My favorite example of such phenomena is seen in the present day explanation of Romeo and Juliet. This story is touted as the greatest romance of all time, but why? I myself find very little love in the story at all; two young people finding a strong connection in what? The only thing they seem to come together on is that they both think they’re families are ridiculous. Even the scenes expressing the emotions to one another are so overly dramatic (even for Shakespeare) that they can hardly be taken seriously. I do not believe Shakespeare was a shrewd or cautious writer, I think he wrote things exactly the way they were meant to be taken. And I take the story as an example of hatred and prejudice destroying youth. I do not see love as the central theme necessarily, there are so many things that a person in love would not have done in this situation. Romeo kills himself almost instantly when he believes Juliet is dead, there is no grieving only a self centered inability to withstand loss. The story is one of immense depth and understanding of the human psyche when young; a young person has a difficult time comprehending things beyond themselves. It is not an insult to say so, it is merely an observation. To love something truly you must love it more than yourself and your own needs. I find none of that idea in the story. But I find this standard wiped across the minds of most people, I am not interested in ballads or sonnets though I have been known to write them. When I want to express my love I go out of my way to make their lives easier, I bear stress and pain to see them happy. I do not pronounce my love loudly on street corners and then collapse into complete uselessness when they are gone. I do believe love is the greatest gift ever granted by god. I just don’t think its nearly as easy as many say it is. Being in love is easy living in love is the difficult part. It is easy to wake up next to your favorite person in the morning and feel smitten beyond comprehension; what is difficult is forgiving, forgetting, and moving on with love even in strife. My pursuit is not to tread upon those who feel that they are in love. To feel love is a miraculous thing. However, I will not deny that love is also the most painful experience I have ever felt; but worth every agony. I feel simply that too many of us are not willing to understand and move through the pain; too many of us await instant and total gratification without sacrifice and sweat. Love with all your heart and do not be afraid to love anyone, just know that it is not always what it seems. Know the love like so many things must be earned and constantly protected and fought for. Your heart will be broken but it will mend, you will be scars and learn from them; but at the end of your days you will look at your scars and smile at all that love has taught you. |
