Free Verse Poem about the February 2010 Snowmageddon in Western PA
My Snow Covered Back Steps Lay In Wait

Peering out the kitchen window at nothing really new
A novel thought passed thru my noggin, jogging my memory
Snow covered steps awaited, planning my untimely demise
Their cold blue icy stare looking back at me grinning

Thoughts of inanimate objects conspiring to kill me
Waiting in lie for me to make my move silently hoping
Thoughts of me flying through the air crashing down hard
My head slamming off each of the sixteen wooden steps

I pause to think and decide that they may have the best of me
Older now and wondering where the hell this fear came from
I am hesitant to tread outward and do battle with them
Outnumbered sixteen to one, me a far cry from my youth

In my mind the sixteen foes laugh at me as my blood spills
They laugh harder at their intimidation of me, held captive
No escaping this internal fear, it is new and unexplored
Confidence lacking, I am trapped and suffocating slowly

Perhaps they are angry at having to bear the weight of my large frame
Countless times I have tread on them unthinking, ungrateful
Never a kind word, thought or thanks for their services rendered
Just repeated usage time after monotonous time, heaviness

Of course I know or believe that they really don't want to kill me
Maybe just injure me or make me look foolish to the neighbors
Just for a laugh and perhaps a warning for future snow covered days
They sit silently in their shroud of white ermine waiting, unwavering
