STUDY RELATES ORANGE JUICE TO REDUCED RISK OF STROKE

Orlando (Fla.) - January 2, 2003 - Harvard University researcher Dr. Kaumundi Joshipura, who conducted this recent study, claims that while increasing fruit intake in general is reported to decrease chances of stroke by 11%, drinking a glass of orange juice daily in addition reduces the risk of stroke by 25%. The results of the study are included in the April publication of The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).

The reported reduction of risk through drinking a glass of orange juice daily is in conjunction with a full balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America, and is the number one cause of adult disability, but is also 80% preventable. It is reported that someone suffers from a stroke every minute of every day in America.

"This large, long-term study provides much needed direct evidence that consumption of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day can reduce your risk of stroke," Dr. Kaumudi said, and adds, "The risk is reduced even more when you drink a glass of orange juice every day."

The Florida Orange Growers Association is currently using the slogan; "Are you drinking enough?" in their advertising. In conjunction with this report, the Growers Association is planning to launch a new print advertising campaign that will feature ads in national magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Good Housekeeping, Health, and Better Homes and Gardens. Radio and TV advertising will be added in the spring.

Health experts hope the results of this study will spur Americans to improve their diets as well.
