BE MY VALENTINE

The old lady reached for the box on the shelf,
The box held what she wanted to keep to herself.
She sat down on the bed and opened the box,
smiling when she saw her son's golden locks.

The box held her treasures of a life long past.
These were memories that would always last.
She would go back to the days so long ago,
seeing the loved ones again, her face aglow.

There in the box was a card trimmed with lace,
a card that no other could ever try to replace.
"BE MY VALENTINE" she read, and her heart
skipped a beat, just as it had right from the start.

He had been a friend and a lover, a husband, a man
who stood by her side and put the ring on her hand.
With respect and pride, he gave her the card one day
as he told her that before long he'd be going away.

It was the start of the war and he had to leave
his valentine there at home, told her not to grieve,
for he would come back and they'd have a home
with children and laughter, she'd not be alone.

Two years later, he returned and gave her a kiss,
"the war is behind us, and do you remember this?"
As a token of love and faith, he gave her a smile
that she would remember for a long, long while.

He handed her the letter she had written to him.
"I'll always be your Valentine, I love you, Jim.
I will always be yours, and you will always be mine,
This promise I'll keep, until the very end of time!"

Happy endings do happen, she thought it right
that their years together were filled with delight.
A home and a family, she had never asked more,
as the card slipped from her hand and to the floor.

Somewhere up in Heaven, they walk hand in hand
Two valentine hearts still in love, a gold wedding band
still shines brightly so the angels can clearly see -
that it is not only Heaven that can be heavenly!
