All creatures usually own their lives’ foundation - that is, suffering, the same as the World owns darkness as its base. Nevertheless, we can see men, animals, things or other belongings because of lights from the Sun, Moon or flames and flare. If we can be able to understand the reality of lives, as suffering, we would be tired of all suffering; suddenly search for the way of flight from suffering to the utmost Dharma of real Happiness. Dharma practices or rehearsals are the greatest way leading us to the real Contentment; then, breaking away from suffering, reaching to the end of Dharma... Especially Dharma for the public at this moment, Luang Por (Brother) will present the topic of moral shame (Hiri) & (Ottappa) moral fear; moral dreads, which are the Best Dharma protects World so we will be able to realize these power of occupancy. Accordingly, let this Dharma firmly fasten into our mind forever.

Without Hiri & Ottappa within those creatures at all time, those being things shall lack the Best of Dharma as the root, becoming the ones reaching through the Birth & Death.  However, those creatures who have shrewdly set Hiri & Ottappa captivating in their minds at all time, shall belong (Brahmacariya) the Holy Life; sublime life; religious life; celibate life; chaste life; strict chastity; Brahma-faring growingly, being calm,  containing the last part of New Birth.

Hiri & Ottappa are the World Dharma protection. World will become peaceful and calm by being applicable these Dharma as the two major fundamentals. Without any moral base, human beings can be unable to identify and differentiate who the parents, uncles & aunts, or their relatives are, due mainly to blending altogether similarly to the flock of sheep & goats, chickens, swine and even dogs.  Ones can realize that the brutal, atrocious animal mainly lack of being shameful or fearful of doing demeritorious, immoral, awful sin. On the contrary, ones own their moral actions; consequently, they can maintain the typical normality or consistency of human beings

Hiri  is the moral shame; Ottappa is the moral fear, moral dread for awful sin following us as our shadow from being afraid of blame or guiltiness, diving or tumbling into the hell.  Ones, therefore, dare not to do dreadful sin.  Especially for Hiri, let consider ones selves principally; for instance, ones who are the leaders or superiors, should have not performed badly sin since they would have become the defective illustration for others. Otherwise, they would be shameful if all men know over the world.

Particularly for Ottappa, the characteristics considered that the World has been principal and most important, or essentially considered other men; for instance, unexploitation or inoccupation to someone for receiving suffering since being afraid of terrible sin may almost certainly follow him forever. Otherwise, it is considered that there are the powerful Recluses and Brahmins who own their magic eyes certainly know the state of minds of others, or capably become visible the secrecy.  If they have sighted that ones have committed lethal sin, they would have blamed on them. Accordingly, all fame and prestige created for a long time may be destroyed or damaged, whenever ones realized, they dare not to commit fatal sin, afraid of falling into hell, rebirthing or reincarnating into lower worlds or unhappy existence.

Tales as told disclosed that a monk ordained with his faith in Lord Buddha, but stayed in a short time; finally wanted to leave monkshood.  Lord Buddha knew his state of mind; then thought him that “Look here, when Lord Buddha has not occurred yet, Boranaka Pundit ordained in the doctrine outside Buddhism, being unsatisfied, still maintained the Holy Life for more than 50 years without showing any desire for everyone because of his Hiri  & Ottappa.  As having realized, you have ordained in the religion aiming to bring creatures out of suffering why you are thinking to leave out, and search for suffering, showing amongst the four assemblies of the Buddhist devout. Why don’t you keep Hiri  & Ottappa within yourselves?”  Afterwards, Lord Buddha has told story in the past as word of warning to one’s mind - that is:

In the past, Lord Buddha himself was born as Brahman’s son who had a number of properties, named “Tipayana Kumara”. After having finished various fields of social sciences & arts, desired to be a householder no more, he brought all of his own properties donated as alms-giving,  said good-bye to group of  relatives, searched for the way leading out of suffering, practiced mediation in the Himalayas forest lasting for 50 years. One day, the hermit left out of forest to taste the savory meal in town. He traveled along various places begging for alms until reaching to the house of his friend, known with each other since having unordained. The family of his friend has given him a warm welcome,  laid supporter without any deficiency.

One day, the dangerous snake bit friend’s son, named “Yanyatatta Kumara”, unable to bear its poison till fainted asleep. His parents knew that their son was bitten by snake so they hurried to carry him to see the hermit for healing,  pleaded that “Oh, your kindness, the ordained usually know the medicine or protective chants or holy stanzas, please kindly help my son for treatment.  The hermit said, “I don’t know any medicine, I am a monk, don’t do any medicine for treatment.”  After being heavily requested for, hermit closed his eyes for meditation, mind-wished to that young boy, who remained only softly, breathe to be well. When his mind deeply meditated, hermit placed his hand on the boy’s head; then, made up his mind by resolving that

“I am the one who require boon or meritorious blessing, faithful in performing strict Brahma chastity for 7 days only. Afterwards, though we do not want to ordain, we want to leave from a disciplinary rule, rule of morality leading in daily life of nonprofessional or layman, however, still bear in chastity for 50 years. With this pledge, let prosperity be this Yanyatatta Kumara, May poison relieve from the boy! Let the boy revive.    Suddenly, the poison in the body of young boy poured out, then, partially seeped into the ground.  Recovering from being fainted asleep, the boy opened his eyes, looked at his mother, and called “Mom”.  He merely twisted his body, but still unable to rise.

Kanhatipayana hermit told his friend.  “My existing boon power can be merely fulfill,  let you perform with your inner power.”  His friend listened to the suggestion, then putting his hands on the boy’s chest, resolving his mind with truthful manner that “As I saw my guest coming into my house for rest, sometimes unsatisfied to let someone relaxing here; albeit, Recluses and Brahmins didn’t know my dissatisfaction.  However, we did not allow, we have to make up our mind to agree with because we are the one who hold Hiri  & Ottappa.  With this pledge, let prosperity be this Yanyatatta Kumara.  May poison relieve from the boy!    Let the boy revive.”

After having resolved his mind by father with truthful manner, poison in the boy’s body again poured out.  Similarly, the mother has resolved with her pledge as well. After all poison disappeared, the boy could be able to rise and talk with his parents and the surrounding relatives as usual.    The hermit’s friend doubtfully asked, “All hermits were calm and peaceful, well-trained themselves, besides Hermit Kanha, none who possesses virtue as him can be scarcely found. Look here! Tipayana, what are you displeased so forcing yourselves to perform strict chastity for a long time?

Hermit disclosed himself “one who has ordained with faithfulness, then returned home again became nonsensical, unreliable. I hated those bad words so I forced myself to perform strict chastity in status of which all wise men have praised, as well as the status of all worthy men. Oh friend!  I prefer to make merit, bearable to stay in chaste life due mainly to Hiri  & Ottappa.

Then, the hermit returned his question. “You have fed all monks and travelers satisfactorily with food, water and meal for monks. Your house is full of rice and water as the dewpond. How do you think though undesirable to give alms, but still giving alms respectfully?  His friend replied “our parents, grandfathers and grandmothers became faithful, lord of alms.  We traditionally act according to our family, if not we may be blamed as the destroyer or demolisher of our family’s traditions. We hated those words so we have to give alms continually despite being dissatisfied with.”

Hermit suggested his friend. “Dear friend!  You have to earning asset with difficulty, then giving as alms or making merits without faith or reliance were unsuitable. From now on, let you believe in Karma and Result of Karma, giving alms with faith and reliance.”  His friend agreed, then gave advice to hermit. “Oh! You are the Grand well-trained! You are the World Class of Boon; dissatisfaction to perform strict chastity is unsuitable as well. Now, let Your Highness be faithful and pleased with performing for Holy life.”  Afterwards, the couple paid respect to say good-bye for the hermit, and then went back. Subsequently, the Bodhisatta Hermit has intended to practice Dharma until being able to develop meditation and covetousness at last.

As having seen, Hiri  & Ottappa can be able to maintain virtue and goodness forever. If human beings lack of Hiri  & Ottappa, the World may become upheaval as the Dark Age, complicated and intricate with turmoil and turbulence significantly. Applying for this Brilliant Dharma, all of us still live together with peacefully and happily. Appreciably, when we have gathered and developed much of Hiri  & Ottappa, we will be refined and purified reaching for the miraculous body easily. Since this Dharma has been the Diva Dharma, we would have become the divinity or Diva. Subsequently, let all of us hold Hiri  & Ottappa up in our minds. Whenever probably doing evil performance, May profoundly consider us and it is adversely affect later. Should make up your mind standstill at all time until gaining inner dependence or reliance – that is; “Dharma Guy or Body” for everyone.
