Rebirth

One: Otherworld

This place. This place I longed for is now in front of me. A place, where the night is red instead of dark blue, where there are two large moons in the vast bloody sky and where I could feel adrenaline run through me, is what I've always dreamed of.

I stood on this cliff and shiver at the feeling of the strong and cold wind on my skin. But I wasn’t afraid of this new world because somehow, it all felt right. There was the familiarity that I longed for. Not exactly the way I pictured it but it was different and I like that. This was all I wanted and waited for.

I decided to see what wonders there was at the bottom but it was pitch black. There was nothing. No, there was something there. I know it. But what could it be? Suddenly, I heard voices behind me. I tried to look back but it was too late. I felt a stabbing pain on my back. Then, the voices were everywhere — voices of strangers yet deep down familiar, cries of agony and triumph and a silent hum. Still, it all felt right. Feeling weak, I fell on my knees and touched my back. The rusty smell of blood entered my nose. I felt nauseous; I tried to turn my head but it won’t. My eyes were fixed on the darkness below. I wasn’t frozen or unable to move; it was just in my head. I raised my blood soaked hands in front of my eyes. As I stare in the nothingness and the blood in front of me, everything became quiet. The voices had gone away. Everything started to blur.

So this is the end? It only lasted for a couple of minutes or maybe even seconds, I’m not sure. As I waited for the pain to be completely gone, I heard a voice of a man.

“Very beautiful, my dear!”, he said sarcastically. No! I’m wrong. He’s neither a man nor a woman. He’s an angel! The sweet musical voice that is more like a comforting voice than that of disgust, what else could he be?

I heard his faint footsteps moved in front of me. He knelt down. I smelled the scent of his breath. Vanilla? No, it’s something sweeter. He cupped my face with his blood tainted hands. His lips formed into a smile. Willing and delirious as I was, I smiled back. What else could you do when an angel smiled at you even at the worst possible situation? I guess it’s just normal. But I felt there was something more behind this smile. Comfort. He caressed my cheek with his warm hands and a weird rush of blood went to my face. I was happy. Contented. I did not wonder why. Who wouldn’t be happy when you die in the hands of an angel? That was the reason I gave to myself. I tried to look at his face so that it would be the last memory I would have of this world but I can’t see a damn thing. It was too dark and blurry. Just please give me a second to have a glimpse of his face! I guess it was already too much to ask. Suddenly, there was a piercing sound that was so loud that it brought back my senses.

Everything was clear again. But he wasn’t there. The nothingness, the moons, the adrenaline, and my blood tainted hands just like the sky was gone. I’m back to reality, my one and only world. I lay still on my bed feeling drowsy from my dream. It was so real: the pain and the joy I felt. I touched my back but there was no blood and the pain was gone. Oh, how I wish it was all true. Dazed and caught in my imagination, I heard light footsteps outside my room. I looked at the irritating clock beside my bed. 6:45 am. He’s here.
