Understanding the rainbow.... |
"London Times July 14, 1989. A boy is born without a brain and turns five. Doctors said he would never smile and would be lucky to live more than a few weeks without a brain. At five years old he laughs at television programs. Doctors discovered soon after he was born a cyst had formed at the stem of the brain and kept the rest of his brain from forming, leaving his skull full of fluid. He survived because the brain stem contains the nerve center for breathing and circulation. But, the part of the brain that allows humans to think and co-ordinate movement, never formed." What then is human? You can make a leap of faith and believe in the soul. But, maybe that isn't necessary. This boy, Andrew, has no brain to think with, but he laughs at television. Emotions are primal, perhaps these emotions are locked in the brain stem? One thing is certain Andrew is happy. And isn't that what we all want? My uncle Fr. Bob told me that the soul pre-exists the conception of the body. I asked him, "What is it?" He said, "Joy." Very strange theology. But, then, there is Andrew. I just can't grasp what the soul is. "That which is not physical, is imaginary." Haggel. My cat is very happy. Does that mean he has a better spirit than me? I'm hitting the wall.. If you have a reasonable answer I'd love to read it. =+= |
