This is an old and delicious recipe for Decadent Squares.
Decadent Squares

This recipe is at least 120 years old (in 1992, when I received this recipe, it was credited with being at least 100 years). It originated with Mrs. Dr. Hamilton in Westport, Ontario.

Squares' Ingredients
¼ cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
½ cup flour
½ tsp baking powder
1 cup shredded coconut
½ cup chopped nuts or raisins

Icing Ingredients
¼ cup butter
½ cup brown sugar
2 Tblsp milk
1 cup icing or confectioner's sugar

Squares' Directions
Melt butter. Add sugar. Stir until dissolved. Let cool (just a bit, so it won't cook the egg). Add egg. Beat well. Add flour and baking powder. Stir in coconut, then nuts or raisins. (Note: I've tried this with semi-sweet chocolate chips, and I thought it was a bit much. My daughter likes it. I think I would like to try it with bitter chocolate chips.) Grease an 8” pan (I use Pam for Baking). Bake at 325 for 25 minutes.

Icing Directions
Boil butter and sugar for 2 minutes on low heat. Add milk and return to boil. Beat in icing/confectioner's sugar. Icing can be poured over the squares' base directly from oven
