This Poem Has No Title Because I Couldn’t be Bothered to Think of One
When I sat down
To lunch one day –
To soup with leeks and peas –
My cheer was somewhat marred
By the menu, if you please.
I let my face
Assume a frown
And glared down at the table.
“’T’ain’t fair,” I pouted miserably
And put aside my ladle.
Then Mother dear
She flashed that smile
(The one that shows her canines)
And asked me sweetly, “Do reply;
“Why not, my darling sunshine?”
I knew my peril
Right enough
Twas death to keep it from her;
With trembling lips and stumbling tongue
I told my verdict to her.
She glared across
Her bowl at me,
All dangerous and stern.
“Wisdom comes with age, maybe,
“But you’re never too young to learn!”
She chased me ‘round
The table twice –
I’m fast but I get it from her side
I couldn’t sit down for a year and a day
‘Cos she broke her spoon on me backside!
