To Ride the Winds. Writer's cramp entry 8/22/10 (Won!)

Today is the day to ride the winds
Boards are primed and have new fins
Spandex suits to feel the flow
We're ready to put on the show

Crowds are set to watch the sight
Of dozens making this year's flight
Families set with blankets and shades
To watch our flying cavalcade

I'm waiting here within the pack
Ready to launch with Uncle Jack
Helmet on, goggles too
Smiling he whispers, me and you

Megaphone down, mayor is done speaking
Red lights shoot up, flares are streaking
We move forward, begin our advance
To defy gravity, take our chance!

Now I'm here, at the crest
Ready to fly, do my best
Not slowing a bit, here at last
I'm over the cliff, heart beating fast

Turn on the board, engage the drive
Something is wrong, I'm in a dive!
I beat my fist upon the board
It hummed to life and I finally soared!

Above the grass and watching people
I corkscrewed round the church's steeple
Banking to and fro, I loop-d-looped
I couldn't help myself, and loudly whooped!

Finally, I have caught the winds
Face goes numb, like filled with pins
But the winds died down before noon
And for me it was over much too soon

We reached the landing hill all right
I imagined we must have been a sight
Dozens of people with boards under arms
All thinking of the vanished winds charms

We get back to town, party in full swing
Still feeling the rush I felt like a king
Looking at Uncle Jack, we exchanged grins
“Now you're a man, for you rode the winds!”
