What would God be like if you had no sight, hearing, language? You may be surprised. |
Perhaps, Dance. To a child born without sight or sound, God is the warmth of the sun, the grace of cool wind, the gravity, the rise and the fall. Leaning forward, insides dropping, leaning back, legs outstretched in wingless flight. And all of this in the unholy dust of the neighborhood playground. If we were all born without sight, voice, or sound, wouldn't church would be a very peculiar place? It would be silent but not still, without light, but not in darkness, and with no language to crowd our busy minds. What on Earth would we do with ourselves, or with each other? How could we read the scriptures, with what could we profess our love for God? Could anyone convey the concept of sin, or the threat of hell for sins against God? I mean, who would be listening? For that matter, who would preach? What words would be said if we had none? And how would we sin in the first place; perhaps by not dancing to the beat of our own melody? How could we share with others what we experienced, or experience the God within us? I have an idea. Perhaps, dance? Then again, there’s always that swing set in the neighborhood playground. |
