The requirement was to write a poem that shows why Elie Wiesel's book is entitled 'Night.
Night.
Elbow to elbow
With friends and neighbors
Screams so hollow-
Warnings of the

Night.
Flames and bodies
Choking away all love,
They can’t stifle
My constant fear of

Night.
A different world,
A different me-
Losing all sense
Of the reason for

Night.
Empty and cold-
Their hearts are closed.
God will save us
From this endless

Night.
Such filthy thieves,
They’ve stolen our will.
The choice isn’t ours:
It belongs to

Night.
“Bare your heads.”
The hang-man’s stare
Leaves no mark.
No one cries for

Night.
The third rope sways.
Death’s hand round his throat,
Eyes unglazed
This glance chills like

Night.
Where is God?
Hanging on the gallows.
The taste of corpses
Haunts me through the

Night.
The bell rang.
Everything regulated
By the bell.
The only escape-

Night.
More blows than food,
Crushed with work.
The day is short;
Unbearable is the

Night.
No turning back,
Even if this is
The wrong decision.
This will be the last

Night.
The breathing skeletons
Shudder with the cold.
Just keep moving.
Don’t stop before

Night.
Throw out the dead.
No tears shed
By those who are accustomed.
They’ve seen too much

Night.
No prayers at his grave.
No candles lit.
I did not weep-
My tears were swallowed by

Night.
