I glanced at my watch and quickened my pace. I was going to be late, again, for a date with my girlfriend. I ran up to her doorstep and knocked on the door. She opened the door, glaring.
"I can't believe you." She said, her voice cracking, as though she was about to cry.
"Miles, I'm sorry. Work kept-"
"Work. That's all you ever care about anymore. You never have time to spend with me. Why don't we just..." She broke it off with a sigh and ran her hands through her curly hair.
"No... Miley, listen-" I whispered, grabbing her hand.
She tugged her hand free and looked me in the eye. "Bye, Jake."
I stood there, mouth open agape, as she slowly closed the door. I swallowed the lump in my throat and got back in my car.
The next morning, I woke up with the annoying beeping of my alarm clock pounding in my ears. I pressed the snooze button and lied back down. Maybe I'll miss work today. It's just once. I closed my eyes and soon I was asleep. I dreamed of Miley’s sweet face, wishing I could fix the problem I’m in. But it was too late. Just my luck.
