The third chapter of my novella

"What do you mean he can't remember anything?" Cassidy said with a start. The doctor sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Well," he said, "it's seems that the injury that he took to the head gave him amnesia. We should consider it lucky that it's not anything more serious. It looks like he's going to make a full recovery and will have full use of his body again. In light of things he got off incredibly easy." Cassidy sat there for a moment taking in the news that her son was going to be okay. Then she looked back up at the doctor and sighed in relief. "So how long do you think it'll be before he gets his memories back?" she asked. The doctor rubbed at the stubble of a beard on his chin and thought. "Well," he said finally, "a this point it's hard to tell. It way take a few hours, it may take a few days, we don't have much of a way to predict these things. Try bringing in some of his things, or family. That might trigger his memory. If that doesn't work you can try taking him home after he's been checked out and try and see if that will work. There are literally hundreds of things hat could trigger his mind at this point." Cassidy nodded and looked over at Alice. "Alice," she said, "why don't you try going in there and talking to him, I'm gonna head home and get Kathy and try and gather some of his things." Alice nodded and stood up to follow the doctor. She followed him down the hall to a room that read 256 on the door. The doctor opened the door and let Alice inside. Bill sat at the hospital bed slowly drinking the water they had on the bed side table. Alice took a deep breath and walked over to him. "Hey Bill," she said softly. Bill looked up at her from his water. "Yeah," he said, "Thats what they keep telling me my name is. Forgive me if I don't remember you, apparently I took a pretty bad blow to the head." He grinned slightly and extended his hand. "I guess your going to have to introduce yourself to me again." Alice smiled and shook Bill's hand. "My name's Alice; you and I were friends. I was there last night when you crashed. Your Chevy got totaled, they said that you where lucky just to be alive." Bill nodded. "Yeah that's what they told me. So I drove a Chevy, huh?" he asked. Alice nodded. "Yeah, it wasn't much to begin with anyway so don't worry about it." she said smiling, "and on the bright side your insurance should pay for a much better truck." Bill smiled. "Well that's comforting to know." he said chuckling. He looked away for a moment, then looked back at Alice. "So I guess my parents are out there in the waiting room, huh?" he asked. Alice cringed at the question. He really couldn't remember anything at all. "Well," she said, "Your Mom went home to get your sister Kathy, and bring back some of your things to see if we can trigger your memory. As for your Dad," she trailed off for a moment trying to think of a way to put it. "Your Dad hasn't been around since you where little. He left when you where just a baby." Bill nodded solemnly and stared off into space for a moment. "Yeah, I think I actually do remember something about that. The few thoughts that I do have right now are all hazy and almost impossible to decipher." Alice nodded. "Yeah, I can only imagine what your feeling right now." she said. Bill leaned back on the hospital bed and closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again he was back in the white room where he had been only hours before. "Well, well, well, look who decided to show up again." a voice said from behind him. He turned and yet again there was the figure that looked exactly like him sitting in the same chair. Bill balled his hands into fists again at the sound of the figures mocking voice. "Look, I still have no clue whats going on here, but I sure as hell didn't choose to come back here." he growled. The figure chuckled and shook his head. "Jeez, lighten up a little why dontcha'? I decided that we should have another interesting little talk like the one we had before." it said. Bill sighed in anger and turned away from the figure trying to find a way out. "I don't have a single thing to talk to you about. Now just get me out of here now!" he yelled. The figure grinned and stood up from his chair and shrugged his arms. "Okay you got it. Guess you don't want to know about who you really are then?" it said. Bill tried to protest, but before he could a sick feeling came over him and his eyes jerked open to reveal the hospital room. He looked over at Alice and saw that she hadn't moved. "How long was I out for?" he asked. Alice looked at him confused. "What do you mean, you only closed your eyes for a second. Why did something happen?" she asked. Bill shook his head and sighed. "No, it's fine." he said. But he knew it wasn't. He knew something inside of him new who he was, and now he had to find a way to convince it to tell him.
