For Dialogue 500 April '11: Prompt "Hey, Karen! Nice backpack.”

"Hey, Karen! Nice backpack.”

“What do you want Jalen?”

“Me? What do I want? I don't want anything. But Durk here, he wants something. Why don't you tell her what you want Durk.”

“Huh huh, I wants me a new backpack.”

“You hear that Karen? Durk wants a new backpack. Look at the way his shoulders strain at the fraying straps of the one he's got. Now don't you want to help him out by donating a nice new backpack to him?”

“Back off, this is my backpack.”

“Are you really sure about that?”

“Yeah, huh huh, you shore 'bout that?”

“I'm very sure it's my backpack. And quit cracking your knuckles, you can't scare me.”

“We can't scare her, huh Durk? I'm thinking we should put that to the test.”

“Huh huh, yeah, I'm thinkin'... I'm thinkin...”

“Don't think Durk. Just say yes.”

“Huh huh, yeah!”

“You boys are in trouble now.”

“Really? 'Cause it looks to me like you're the one in trouble. Grab her Durk!”

“Yoohoo! Mrs. Avery!”

“Mrs. Avery?”

“Huh, Mrs. Avery?”

“Suckers!”

“You idiot Durk, I told you to grab her! Argh, after her. You can't outrun us Karen!”

“Yeah, uh, you can't-”

“Shut it Durk, and catch her. Ahh, where you gonna go now Karen? This is a dead end. Grab her again Durk, and this time don't let go.”

“Let me go you ugly oaf!”

“Huh huh, who you callin' ugly? I got you, don't I? Ooph!”

“That's right, run away Karen! We'll deal with you later. You okay Durk?”

“She kickded me 'tween mah legs.”

“Yeah, but you held on to your backpack. Good job Durk. Now empty it and toss yours in that dumpster. Class is gonna start soon.”

“Okay.”

“Now remember Durk, your Nana got you this backpack last weekend.”

“My Gran got me this backpack last weekend.”

“Jalen! Durk! Would you boys please come up to the front of the class?”

“Is anything the matter, Mrs. Avery?”

“This poor girl here has told me quite the story. Could I take a look at that backpack you're wearing Durk?”

“My Gran got me this backpack. Last weekend! She gots me for it this last weekend! Err, She gots it for me this last weekend.”

“Really now? Please, give me the bag Durk. I'd like to take a look at it.”

“What are you waiting for Durk, hand it over to her.”

“Uhh, shore thing Mrs. Averay.”

“Now Durk, are you sure this is your backpack?”

“Yessum.”

“So was it your Gran who bedazzled the name Karen in the upper pocket?”
