Don't you just hate it when that happens? (Written entirely on the iPod Touch.)
Don't you just hate it when you end up typing an essay with your thumbs? I am currently lying in my loft bed, after having consumed half a bottle of glorified vinegar that has the audacity to call itself red wine, doing just that. I have been having a conversation via text-message with my buddy from work, with whom I have been collaborating on for a hip-hop project for the past few weeks. He is at the same place I am, claiming to be "slightly drunk" after having drunken half a fifth if what I assume to be vodka, his usual liquor of choice. It seems he holds his booze quite well, after having consumed what I figure to be a tenth, but I digress. The subject we are discussing is our hip-hop music, and I typed up in a single message about four text-messages worth of content on the tiny qwerty keyboard my cellphone provides to convince him that web-fame is not a goal worth pursuing.  After having spent approximately eight minutes on that single message, I asked myself the first sentence of this passage. After which, I swiftly proceeded to fetch my fully-charged iPod and began composing an actual essay on the subject of essay composition. I do not know what possessed me to do such a thing, but here I am nonetheless. Only a few years ago, it seemed typing with one's thumbs was an absolute joke. Now, it's practically accepted to use a mobile device for writing composition. Even Drake has appeared on camera with "freestyles" that he composed on his blackberry. Sure he got a lot of flak from the Internet because of it, but it really speaks to us as a culture that something that can be perceived as art can be created on what once was a device for nothing more than communication for rich businessmen. And don't get me started on the visual art that can be created with a mere iPod. It's astounding, really. I am torn between whether or not this is a good thing or a bad thing. The conservative in me says that art should be restricted to easels and notebooks, while the progressivist in me accepts change, no matter how unnerving it may be. Is it true art if it is made with a thumbstroke rather than a penstroke? A slide of the index finger rather than the grace of a paintbrush? They say that true art is incomprehensible, and that makes a little sense. Not enough sense to hold any water, though. Either way, going back and forth between this essay and the conversation between my buddy with a bathroom break somewhere in between has caused
me to lose track of my original topic. Just in case I end up publishing this to Writing.com, I shall shamelessly plug the aforementioned music project into this essay: http://www.YouTube.com/theDEDcity
To whomever reads this work, please check out that page and listen to the music we have made. And here I am, saying web-fame isn't worth it. Don't you just love it when you end up typing an essay with your thumbs?
