This short story is about Evin and his friend. Evin makes a grave mistake. |
Evin walked down the slightly lit road with a bounce in his step. His long blonde hair posed in front of his eyes as if to attack his goldish-brown irises. He walked in his mind with the weirdest things always going through his head. He made sure never to step on the cracks in the sidewalk. Not for his poor mothers back because death had already claimed her back for it’s own, but at the thought Evin quickly pushed the sad memory of that day away. Evin turned sharply, coming upon the small green lawn lit singularly by a small light on the small, brick house wall. He trudged through the long grass still needing a good trim after the long winters withdraw. He bounced over the three steps leading up onto the house doorstep and rapped three times on the door. Clump clump clump! And the door opened. “Ahhh Evin! Do come in, please!” The man standing before him looked as if time itself decided to take a bite out of him. He had brown hair with little white hairs randomly protruding, standing proud, the man was still only 25. Evin grinned at his friend, “Joel! My good friend, I haven’t seen you in forever!” Evin said stepping past him into the dimly lit room. The room was quaint and simple, it had wood flooring and to the right was a narrow hallway lined with white walls and green carpet. To the left was stairs rounding around into the dark down stairs. “I’m sorry, I normally like to chat and catch up on what’s been going on but I have little time. Come, follow me.” Joel said ushering him down the stairs. They walked down swiftly as if lava was following them at their heels at every turn. At the bottom of the large stair case was two doors, one leading to a place familiar to him, they had good memories of parties in that room, Thanks Giving with many round tables and jolly people all around. People laughing, all care free. The room that he had never entered always had an ominous feel to it and they entered it now. The small metal door swinging open quietly contrasting to the immensity and megesticness of the room was quiet sad. The room had a towering safe with machines of every sort hooked up to it but, amazingly, it was silent. Evin could do nothing but stand in awe. His jaw dropped and a bit of saliva came out as a result. “What the **** is that?!” Evin nearly yelled unnecessarily. “It’s the safe.” Joel said bluntly. “Well I can tell that much but what does it have inside, and what are the machines for?” he questioned. “It holds an ice cube.” Joel said grinning, obviously holding something back. “Go on…” He said. “It’s so cold that if it touches ANYTHING it instantly freezes it, it’s what made space the way it is.” Joel explained “and the machines make so that it touches nothing, not even a particle of air, if it did it would travel through that air touching more air till it froze everything.” Evin had no idea what to say, but then he laughed. He broke out into bouts of histarical laughter, “Hahaha! Your so funny! I always loved how you were such a joker, even in highschool you were voted class clown” He said. The reason he had been voted class clown in fact was because Joel had a brilliant idea of how to master the human mind, but of course it was crushed by his fellow teenage “friends” Evin knew that it was just a joke, he had no doubt in his mind. He walked slowly to a leaver that was flipped up to “On” and below it had an “Off, please, do not flip this switch for any reason. The reason it was even made, I know not.” And so of course Evin flipped it. He was still laughing the entire time till that particle of air reached him only nanoseconds later. |
