This is a short story I wrote to, sort of, ease universe that is my mind in a sense. Enjoy
My name is Kyle. I’ve known Jake and Jeff for 13 years since kindergarten. Jeff and I have been best buds ever since, but once Jake hit highschool, he became a cocky jock and he dropped us. But something very interesting has brought us together again. Now, I don’t know much about what’s going on but our town, Ridgeview, was invested with something. And a lot of it. They sort of looked like people, but not alive. They were all so bloody and deformed, patches of blood and pus covering their bodies from head to toe, and yellow eyes that looked like it was best not to poke them. Otherwise, pus would come spewing out. This outbreak was nasty.
In my family, my brother, Keith, was the first to get the infection. He was just on xbox like any other day talking to Jake. Jake and Keith are best friends. But really, they did spend a lot of time together after school. Keith was 5 years older than us, and he really hates kids our age, but for some reason he reason, he really did like hanging out with Jake.
Jake says when they were in the xbox party, they were playing Zombie Ops–You’ll see the irony to this later on in the story. “Owned!!! I just owned that one guy, he’s a total–” Jake says he stopped right there. Since they were on xbox, Jake didn’t see what happened, but when my dad and I walked into the room, we saw Keith frozen right there, his controller in his hand, and headset on his head. His mouth was open and he was literally frozen like this. “Keith? Dude wake up.” I said desperately trying to catch his attention, but no luck.
“Should I call 911 dad?”
“What the… do that son.” he said. So I did. I called 911 and I didn’t exactly know what to tell the first responders over the phone. So really I just explained to them exactly what I saw.
“Yes ma’am, he’s completely frozen in front of the TV, his mouth is open and he’s not responding to my neither my dad nor me.”
“Kyle! Tell ‘em he’s got no heart beat!” my dad said to me.
“Ma’am, my dad says his heartbeat stopped.. YES WE NEED AN AMBULANCE DAMNIT!” What a stupid thing for her to ask me. But now that I think about it, it did make sense that she asked. If he doesn’t have a heart beat, instantly it would mean he’s dead. So what would be the point of going to the hospital? I feel sort of bad for yelling at her, but she must have understood. I mean, under these circumstances, who could think straight?
“Okay ma’am, thankyou very much… You too.” I told the dispatcher over the phone. “Hey dad, she said an ambulance will be here in a jiffy.”
“Son, stand back!” my dad exclaimed to me. “Stand back, now!!”
“Dad, what are you..”
“Stand back!”
Before my eyes I saw my brothers pale white skin darken to a very dark green, almost the color of dried seaweed, his veins turned to lime green and became more vivid and easier to see throughout his body. His eyes turned clear blue to greenish-yellow. And suddenly he shook his head and rose. He looked at his hands in confusion, but then he looked at me. I could sense that rage was building up in him. He just stood there in front of me, challenging me with a battle stance, his rageful eyes stared right into mine for about three seconds.
“Rawwwwwwwwwwwrrrrhisssssssss” he roared. He then proceeded to charge at me. It looks almost as if he was trying to pummel me, but no luck for him. As he was running, I backed right into a table behind me and dodge him. I then ran right for the backyard glass door, opened it, and right as Keith ran behind me, I slammed it in his face.
“Damnit Keith! What are ya doing?” I said. I was just in shock, I couldn’t believe my brother is actually.. a zombie! (See the irony?)
“Rawwwwwwrhissss” He kept ramming against the glass door, trying to get at me. I hopped the fence and ran as fast as I could to Jake’s house. I would rather have run over to Jeff’s house since I do trust him more but, Jake’s house was right next door, and he almost kind of knew what was going on.
“Keith is a zombie? How the heck is that even possible?” Jake said in surprise.
“I don’t know dude, but hey listen, we’ve gotta go over to Jeff and pick him up.” I said “Then we can head to my house and see how bad the outbreak is.” So we did that, we went over and picked up Jeff. We explained to him the entire situation. But just as we were talking, we heard a car turn over.
“What the heck was that?” Jeff said. We all went towards the window to check it out.
“Holy crap,” said Jack “the streets are filled with raged zombies!”
“Alright guys, let’s just chill here for a bit.” I suggested “We need to come up with a plan. We’ve gotta head to my house and get some supplies and my dad… Oh my God.”
“What Kyle?” Jeff said very curiously
“My parents..” I uttered “my parents are still in the house with Zombie-Keith…” No one said anything, but there were a lot of sudden gasps. We all looked at eachother, and seemed to understand that we all needed to go over to my house and check on my parents.
“Go! Go! Go!” We all said running to my house. Once we got to my door, I put the key in and turned the knob to open the door. Right when the door creaked open, I stepped inside and immediately felt cold liquid seeping through my shoes. I looked down and it was red and it felt very sticky on my feet. It was… blood. We continued walking in.
“Dad!?” I yelled “Mom?!” No reply.
“Maybe they went for help.” said Jeff
“I don’t think so, look.” I pointed to the kitchen where there layed my parents. Zombie-Mom and Zombie-Dad. However, they looked as if they were sleeping. But the site was still just as scary as the raging Zombie-Keith that almost killed me. We all ran for the study room which was on the ground floor of our house. We secured the door with furniture.
“Alright man, listen. We need to get our of here.” Jeff said “I have a really bad feeling this outbreak is going to get very nasty, very fast.”
“Yeah, we need a plan dude.” Jack said
“Let’s just try to head to the Walmart.” I suggested. It seems I’ve been doing a lot of suggesting today.
“Are you crazy man? We’ll get killed!” Jeff said “I don’t know about you Kyle, but I want to live.”
“It’s a good idea, maybe he’s right.” Jake said “We don’t have the supplies we need. So either way, we risk dying. We might aswell risk our lives trying to get survival supplies instead of risking our lives by doing nothing. Let’s just gather up some materials to help us along the way. Then we’ll setup camp in the walmart and we’ll decide on our next plan.”
So we hopped out of the window and charged for Jeff’s house which was about 4 houses down from mine. We went inside and we were safe. Jeff’s parents were away on a marriage retreat. So his house was pretty much a safe house, but unfortunately, there wasn’t enough supplies there. So we had to keep moving. We grabbed some baseball bats, and rubbing alcohol, just incase. And we left Jeff’s house and headed for the walmart. The route was pretty easy going. We didn’t encounter any zombies, any we couldn’t handle atleast. We finally approached the Walmart parking lot. But we had more problems.
“What the hell…” Jack said “There’s gotta be over 10,000 zombies out there!”
“Alright guys, let’s just do this.” I said “On the count of 3, we are just going to run through swinging at whatever gets in our way.”
“Alright man, I’ll count.” Jake said. “One…two..three!!”
We all charged. This was the most gruesome thing I’ve ever seen. There was blood and heads flying everywhere.
“Chaaaaarrrrge!” Jeff yelled.
“Oh my God, why am I doing this?” Jake said “I’m not going to make it. I might aswell just dive into the hoard and be done with it..”
“NO!” We both yelled. It was too late, he had dived into the hoard. One down, two to go. This infection is evil. It causes people we all know and love to just go crazy. Only a matter of time before Jeff turns on me, or even worse, I turn on Jeff. I can’t live like this.
“Look man, let’s just follow in Jake’s example. He had the right idea.” I said.
“We can survive this bro.” Jeff said as he patted my back.
“We can’t man, we aren’t even halfway there. Giving up may be the right thing to do here.”
“I’m not giving up, and I’m not letting you give up. We are going to get through this.”
“Alright man, let’s do this.” So we went through the rest of the parking lot and charged. We were swinging at anything that came our way. It was the greatest feeling I’ve ever felt when we finally got to the walmart doors.
“We made it dude!” I exclaimed.
“Yeah man, I told you! All you had to do was overcome your mind. But listen, our troubles aren’t over. Behind these Walmart doors, there are hundreds of people who are all infected with this shit. And we have to wipe everyone out in there so we can setup camp. Are you ready for that?”
“I say let’s do it.” I said. So our adventure with battling the infected continued, and Jeff and I watched eachother’s backs. In the sequel, I will tell you whether or not we managed to fight everyone off and form a survival camp.
