Describe Your First Job

one thousand degrees in the sun,

flowers surrounding me,

daisies, impatiens, and geraniums.

i give them life,

but they take away mine.

they’re treated better than i am

during my shift from 9 to 5.

stuck inside glass walls,

i look out and pray

for a fire..any excitement

to invigorate my day.

i remember one time

when jordan almost cut off his thumb.

it was a dreary april afternoon;

we were all soaked from the rain.

we filled up pots with freshly stirred dirt.

he stuck his hand in the machine

and almost didn’t get it back.

i think it hurt me more than him;

after he left,

we worked in silence.

he didn’t work for months.
