Dick Dewberry's surprise ..
Dick Dewberry is the roughest, most ass-eyed, bald headed little man you'd ever want to meet. Not really small in stature, but wretched, a narrow minded belittling man.
Strange and deranged, Dick runs his crew with an iron fist. 10 years with Dewberry is quite an accomplishment, not to mention an almost unachievable milestone. Jerry Pike had always been a trustworthy, hard working employee. Jerry is well liked by the other men, he is foreman now after so many years. But, Jerry and Dick weren't friends by any stretch of the imagination. They had their clashes and once or twice had come to blows, but Jerry had enured. Seems and eternity in Jerry's mind, the past ten years.
Dick went to his office and closed the door. He had to put down a few words to honor Jerry for being with the company for 10 years.. "Why do I need to give Jerry recognition for 10 years of service. It's his job isn't it?", Dick mumbled to himself. He started to write and immediately tore out the page, crumpling it and starting over. Dick went on like this for hours. He was plagued with having to give a kind word to anyone, let alone an employee. His employees were beneath him in his mind, pawns to mistreat and squeeze every last bit of work out of them. Dewberry, as all his employees referred to him, went on like this for hours.
The work day was late so Dick got on the intercom and in his own demanding tone, called everyone to the break room for a meeting. Everyone squeezed into the small room muttering words of disdain for their boss, laughing and carrying on, patting Jerry on the back, poking fun. Jerry was rather calm, not expecting any kind of real notice for his 10 years. "Who really cares anyway", Jerry thought to himself. Dewberry burst through the door as always, rudely bumping into people, a bully. Dick started by telling everyone "let's make this quick so we can get back to work and that things needed to tighten up around the shop and that everyone needed to work harder. Employees mumbled but didn't really stand up as a group to defend themselves. None of them had ever really had the balls to stand up to Dewberry. Jerry remained silent. "Now in recognition of 10 years of service with this company", Dick grumbled, then said in a voice of disdain, "Jerry come on up here". Jerry walked at his pace, taking time to savor the moment. Jerry stood in front of Dewberry awaiting his grand gesture. Dick sneered a bit then grunted, "Jerry, I've thought long and hard about this and I really just couldn't come up with much to say. So, I'm gonna give you a quarter raise and this gift card to Olive Garden. Good job". More mumbles from the group of employees arose as Dick put out his hand to Jerry. Jerry took grip of Dicks hand and looked him straight in the eye. He had purpose for the words that he was about to say, he'd been thinking about it for months. "Dick", Jerry said in a calm yet stern voice, continuing with, "I've been here for 10 years now, I'm thankful for you givin' me a job". Jerry paused then squeezing Dicks hand just a bit firmer, Jerry said in a very calm, very plain voice, "I quit". Jerry turned dropping the gift card, letting loose of Dicks hand then silently and proudly left.
