A special find came too late.
The Find

I could not stay in our house
for one more minute. Mother
finally let the medicine relieve the
cancer's pain and drug her to
sleep.
I went outside for some fresh air
and to start our flower garden. I
hit the old flowerbed ground
with all my might
to break up the dry soil. Something
flew a few inches from my shovel
that caught my eye. It was silver metal
sticking out of a clod of clay. I picked it up
and opened the clod to see mother's
wedding ring that she lost the day
after dad left. I ran inside the house
and to her room. The house
was silent except for the ticking
of our old grandfather clock.
I slowly opened the door and looked
at mother. She looked so peaceful.
But as I tip-toed to put the ring on her
night stand, I saw that she had died.
She had the first smile on her face
that I had seen in months.
Somehow, I felt that she had died the
minute I had found her ring. Tears came
down my cheek and I left the ring
on the night stand.

Well this is an attempt of a free verse poem. Remember I said attempt, because it is not my strongest form to write in.
