a contest submission for 4th of July short story.
In 1940, a little boy by the name of Charlie was eager to join in the 4th of July fireworks display and picnic.
Each Year in the sleepy little coal-mining town of Harlan, The community came out to have potato sack races, three-legged races, a greased pig calling, and the lot. All The male Children in the town were ready with their Big Ben overalls ready for pie-eating contests, watermelon and Coconut Cake for dessert, and cooked out franks and beef burgers. All of the citizens enjoyed the festivities and it would last all day long and into the night hours, until the children's favorite, the firework display.

Charlie was about five years old and was an amazing burst of energy, his parents couldn’t keep up with him. He was an imaginative and inquisitive child. His father stopped and got Charlie some firecrackers and bottle rockets. In those days salesmen set up along the roadside. Charlie had a younger sister who was eager to learn from her older brother. He began playing with the fireworks, Just holding them, Not lighting them.

Suddenly he turned to his sister and said “ I want to introduce you to a couple of my good friends, This is Pop the firecracker and this is his cousin Bang the Bottle Rocket.” Charlie was all the time creating invisible friends and changing objects into his personal pals. His sister began laughing so hard their parents smiled at the imagination of the oldest child. It would likely be a day to remember As Charlie would be dotting about everywhere and introducing his new friends to all of the other children. His father took a group of the children aside and gave them all sparklers to hold while he to Pop and Bang for an explosive ride. Children loved it.

Later that day, the younger sibling was running around aimlessly and stepped on a watermelon rind covered in yellow Jackets, needless to say, she began screaming as numerous bees stung her foot, later that evening the child’s foot looked as though it would burst. The town’s most popular doctor was there and looked after the child, giving her a shot and an antibiotic. The family stayed and the little girl fell asleep under the oak tree, on her mother's hand-stitched quilt. The stately oak was wrapped by a large yellow bow. And red white and blue banners.

The band played a square dance for the adults while the children enjoyed the multiple contests.
At evenings end a spectacular firework display was set off. The children and adults as well were in awe of it. The end
