Trust: A Poem

I can not trust them completely; no one has earned that right,
I may trust them with my body, with my very life,
But my heart is my own,
I’ll never be someone’s wife.

Never let them get close enough to hurt you,
But decide carefully on what you do,
For they will hurt you that is certain,
Whether over things big or small.

But if you are immune to their words and lies,
Or if you have never laid in the dark and cried.
Let them close if you can bare the heartache,
But decide carefully, it’s for your own sake.
