A short of a zombie apocalypse based on my home town and close friends.
(A blank black screen.)

NICK: (V.O.) Fade in.

(SLIDE SHOW OF NICKS DESCRIPTIONS)

NICK: (V.O.) A party. Saturday night. It’s a basic Saturday night. Movie at Sam’s in her basement. Bottle of cheap vodka Carson’s sister, Kaitlyn usually supplies. She’s always around because she’s dating David whose a friend of Sam’s whose on the debate team who blah blah blah. In short, I’m with my three friends who each have about two other friends around. My friends are Miel, the blonde girl on the right in red, Sam, brunet girl in the white lace shirt, and Carson, who is obviously the tall guy in the middle. I’m never exactly sure where our friendships stemmed, but we fit... usually. Carson is sort of..... But Carson’s cool. Sam’s the one that got away to every guy in this god for saken town.  But out of the three of us, Meil’s the more mysterious one. Then there’s me. I’m kinda the behind the scenes guy. I mean, between the four of us, we’re all awkward, but, usually, I feel pretty freaking awkward. I never know what to say. But I happened to be the one who survived. And I guess thats why you want me to tell you the story.

(BLACK SCREEN: DAY 1/9:12 P.M.)

(SMALL HIGH SCHOOL PARTY. MUSIC’S PLAYING MILDLY. PEOPLE ARE SITTING ON THE COUCH. KAITLYN AND DAVID ARE ON THE COUCH NEXT TO CARSON MAKING OUT WITH EACH OTHER. CARSON IS LOOKING SLIGHTLY UNCOMFORTABLE. NICK IS STANDING BY THE SPEAKER WITH HIS IPOD WHILE SAM IS DANCING WHIMSICALLY AROUND HIM, WHICH OF COURSE IS KIND OF AWKWARD, BUT IT IS SAM. MIEL IS SITTING IN A CATY CORNER ACROSS FROM CARSON AND THE COUPLE. THERE’S A COUPLE  OF OTHER PEOPLE TAKING SHOTS AND TALKING.)

NICK: (V.O.) So on that particular Saturday night, everything was going as it usually does. I played D.J. as Sam was dancing around. Carson was trying to talk with Miel as Carson’s sister made out with David. We never really predicted what would happen that night, but who could?

(CUT TO A CONVERSATION BETWEEN MIEL AND CARSON)

CARSON: You can’t expect her to think any different of him. He’s ridiculous and she’s too cool.

MEIL: I guess.

CARSON: And plus, she listens to cocorosie and BrainPan. A football player would think those really are breakfast cereals.

MEIL: Well they do sound like cereal.

(CUT TO NICK AND SAM)

SAM: Whose this?

NICK: The Strokes?

(CONT. PARTY SCENE)

NICK: (V.O.) So basically, it was a normal, boring, Saturday night. Nothing to blog about. Well, until.

SAM’S MOM: (SCREAM FROM UPSTAIRS) SAAAAAAMMMM!!

(CUT TO SAM)

SAM: (SARCASTICALLY) Holy shit. (TURNS DOWN MUSIC. TO MOM: ) What do you want Mom?

(NO ANSWER FROM UPSTAIRS. SOME SCRAMBLING IN THE KITCHEN. THE WHOLE TIME, THE REACTION FROM THE PARTY IS BEING FILMED.)

SAM’S MOM: SAAM! SAAM!

(SAM IS FROZEN. EVERYONE IN THE ROOM STARTS TO PAY ATTENTION AND REALIZE WHAT’S GOING ON IS SERIOUS.)

SAM: Mom, are you okay?

(SOMETHING MOANS. SOMETHING BREAKS. A GUNSHOT. IT’S DEAD QUITE DOWN STAIRS AS EVERYBODY IS WATCHING THE DOOR THAT LEADS TO THE UPSTAIRS. A FIGURE STARTS TO MOVE TOWARD THE DOOR VERY SLOWLY. THE KNOB TURNS AND THE DOOR OPENS WHICH PRESENTS SAMS MOM WITH A WHTE FACE AND A SHOTGUN IN HER HAND.)

SAM’S MOM: I think everyone needs to go home. (PAUSE.)

(NOBODY MOVES)

SAM’S MOM: GO HOME! NOW!

(EVERYONE STARTS TO MOVE PAST SAM’S MOM AND WALK UP THE SATIRS. SAM’S MOM DOESN’T MOVE OR BLINK. SHE’S IN SHOCK. MIEL, CARSON AND NICK STAY CLOSER BEHIND AS SAM CONFRONTS HER MOTHER)

SAM: Mom, what happened?

(SAM’S MOM STILL DOESN’T TWITCH. SUDDENLY, THERE’S A SCREAM FROM KAITLYN UPSTAIRS)

SAM: Mom?

(PAUSE.)

SAM’S MOM: I don’t think we should stay here tonight.

SAM: I’m going to call the police.

MEIL: You both can stay at my house.

SAM’S MOM: Come, Sam.

(THEY BOTH GO UPSTAIRS. THE GROUP FOLLOWS. SAM PULLS OUT HER CELLPHONE. DIALS THE POLICE. AS SHE’S ON THE PHONE, THEY GO UPSTAIRS TO DISCOVER A BODY ON THE FLOOR. THEY ALL REACT IN DISTRESS EXCEPT SAM’S MOM WHO WALKS RIGHT PAST STILL IN HER STATE OF SHOCK.)

SAM: (ON PHONE) Yeah, I think my mom was attacked. Yeah, 801 Echo Lane. She shot at the man, he appears dead. Okay. (HANGS UP.)

CARSON: Well?

SAM: They told us they’d be there soon. We all need to wait outside. (LOOKING FOR HER WONDERING MOTHER) Mom!

(CUT TO OUTSIDE. THEY ALL SIT ON THE PORCH AS SAM SLOWLY WALKS HER MOTHER OUTSIDE.)

SAM: Mom, please tell us what happened?

SAM’S MOM: Well, I was just watching the T.V. in the upstairs living room. Of course, I had it up real loud so I could hear over you guys down stairs but, I didn’t hear it walk in.

CARSON: It?

SAM’S MOM: I heard something moving in the kitchen and I just assumed it was one of your friends until I heard a strange moaning noise. It was more of an animal noise, ya know? (BEGINS TO TEAR UP) And then, I checked around the corner, and I saw a figure. I asked who it was and it started...

(THE POLICE DRIVE UP AND SAM’S MOM GET’S DISTRACTED. THE GROUP BEGINS TO WALK TOWARD THE CAR.)

POLICE MAN #1: (RUSHING OUT OF THE CAR.) So what exactly happened?

SAM’S MOM: A man was in my house and he attacked me. I grabbed my gun from the rack and I shot him.

POLICE MAN #1: We’ll go check it out. Officer Hensley will take your story’s down if you stay out here. Thank you. (LEAVE’S)

(OFFICER HENSLEY MOVES TO THE GROUP AND STARTS ASKING INDIVIDUALS QUESTION AS HE TAKES OUT HIS NOTE PAD.)

(CUT TO INSIDE THE HOUSE. THREE POLICE OFFICERS WALK IN BUT THERE’S NO BODY. THERE IS SOME BLOOD ON THE FLOOR. THEY WALK BACK OUTSIDE.)

POLICE MAN #2: There is nobody in there Miss. Are you sure you killed him?

SAM’S MOM: (A LOOK OF HORROR. RUNS INSIDE THE HOUSE. ALL FOLLOW.)

(CUT TO HOUSE.)

SAM’S MOM: That’s not possible. I killed him.

POLICE MAN #1: Where did you shoot him Miss.

SAM’S MOM: In the heart. It’s not possible!

(BLACK SCREEN: DAY 2)

(ALARM CLOCK READS “7:35 A.M.”)

NICK: (V.O.) The next day the events at Meil’s house were cataclysmic...... and very assumed.

(CUT TO MIEL AND SAM AT MEIL’S HOUSE. THEY ARE SCREAMING AS SAM’S MOM IS TRYING TO EAT THEM. THEY’RE BARRICADING HER BEHIND MEIL’S BATHROOM DOOR.)

NICK: (V.O.) Apparently,

(CUT TO A SHOT OF LAST NIGHT WHEN SHE WAS GETTING BIT WHILE BEING ATTACKED.)

NICK: (V.O.) She had been bitten last night.

(CUT BACK TO CURRENT SITUATION.)

NICK: (V.O.) Nobody knew.

(SAM AND MIEL KEEP STRUGGLING WITH THE DOOR WHEN SUDDENLY, SAM’S MOM SLIPS AND LANDS FACE FIRST. HER HEAD FALLS BETWEEN THE DOOR CRACK. SAM BASH’S HER HEAD WITH THE DOOR A COUPLE TIMES.)

MIEL: Come on. I have to go see something.

(SAM’S IS SPEECHLESS BUT FOLLOWS MIEL ANYWAY.)

(CUT TO OUTSIDE WHERE THERE’S A PLETHORA OF ZOMBIES WALKING AROUND. IT’S CHAOS IN THEIR LITTLE TOWN. MEIL AND SAM LOOK AROUND STUNNED. THEY QUICKLY GO BACK INSIDE AND SHUT THE DOOR.)

(CUT TO BACK INSIDE.)

MEIL: Mooom?

(MIEL’S MOM, ALSO A ZOMBIE, RUSHES THROUGH THE DOOR. IT SURPRISES EVERYONE. MIEL GRABS AN UMBRELLA OUT OF THE HOLDER AND HITS HER MOM WITH IT. SHE TAKES A CANE AS WELL.)

MEIL: (TO SAM) Here.

(HANDS HER THE CANE. THEY QUICKLY WALK BACK OUTSIDE AND AROUND THE HOUSE. THEY REACH A SHED.)

SAM: What’s this cane gonna do?

MEIL: Not very much.

(OPENS THE SHED. THERE’S SOME MELEE WEPONS INSIDE. MIEL TRADES SAM’S CANE FOR A BAT.  A ZOMBIE CREEPS BEHIND SAM AS MIEL WARNS HER. JUST WHEN IT ABOUT ATTACKS HER, CARSON COMES UP BEHIND HER WITH A SHOVEL AND SMASHES IT’S HEAD DISCREETLY. THE GIRLS STAND THERE LOOKING AT HIM CURIOUSLY.)

CARSON: What?

SAM: (SHE POINTS AT THE ZOMBIE)

CARSON: In the head. Duh, it’s like every zombie movie.

MIEL: Do you know where Nick is?

CARSON: (LOOKS BACK AT THE NEIGHBORS HOUSE WHERE THERE’S ZOMBIES ON THE DECK EATING SOMETHING.) Probably a zombie by now. Quick, grab things that look like weapons.

(THEY GRAB A SET OF WEAPONS AND RUN INSIDE. AS SOON AS THEY’RE INSIDE, THE WINDOW ACROSS THE ROOM IS BEING BARRICADED BY A HUNGRY ZOMBIE.)

SAM: Where’s the gun?

MIEL: We don’t have one.

SAM: Are you serious? It’s the zombie apocalypse and you don’t have a gun?

MIEL: Like I expected to have a zombie apocalypse with my cereal this morning!

CARSON: (BLUNTLY) Really? Guy’s we need to get going.

SAM: We need to find Nick!

CARSON: Okay. (BEGINS TO LEAVE.) Do you have everything you need?  (POINTS)

Grab that bag.

(CUT TO CAR. CARSON STARTS THE CAR. THEY DRIVE.)

CARSON: Miel, call Nick.

MIEL: (BEAT.) He’s not picking up!

(CUT TO THEM PULLING UP TO NICK’S HOUSE. THEY WALK INSIDE AND STRIVE TO FIND NICK WHO, THEY DISCOVER, IS SITTING ON THE LIVING ROOM FLOOR, PLAYING VIDEO GAMES.)

MEIL: What are you doing?

NICK: (HAPPY.) Hey guy’s. One sec, almost done.

CARSON: (SLOWLY) Nick, is your dad here?

NICK: He just went to his friends real quick. Why?

(PAUSE. THEY ALL LOOK TERRIFIED.)

(CUT TO NICK CALLING HIS FATHER IN DESPERATION. THE ATTENTION IS AVERTED TOWARD THE REST OF THE GROUP WATCHING THE NEWS WHICH DESCRIBES THE CASE OF THE APOCALYPSE. SUDDENLY NICK GETS OFF THE PHONE.)

NICK: He’s not answering. (BEAT.) I’m gonna go find him. I’ll be fine. You guys go ahead. I’ll catch up.

MEIL: Uh, no. We’re going to do this together. All of our parents are zombies and we can’t risk yours.

NICK: All of your parents are dead?

CARSON: All of our parents are dead. (LONG PAUSE.)

(THIS IS THE BREACH OF REALIZATION THAT THERES NOT MUCH HOPE.)

CARSON: Come on, we have to go.

(CUT TO OUTSIDE THEY GET IN THE CAR. STILL SHOT OF THEM DRIVING AWAY AND THEN A MASS OF ZOMBIES GO STUMBLING AFTER THEIR CAR.)

NICK: (V.O) Alright so, most of our escapes were pretty lucky I guess since none of us got bitten . But you can’t assume we didn’t run into trouble.

(CUT TO A MASS OF ZOMBIES AROUND THEIR CAR.)

CARSON: Dang it.

MEIL: Mhm.

NICK: (V.O) But we got away.

(CUT TO STILL SHOT FROM ABOVE OF A FEW OF THE ZOMBIES RUN OVER AND THE CAR DRVING AWAY, BLOOD TRACKS ON THE ROAD.)

NICK: (V.O.) The first time.

(CUT TO THEM RUNNING THROUH THE FORREST AWAY FROM A FEW ZOMBIES.)

MEIL: Where does your dad’s friend live exactly?

NICK: You’ll see.

(SUDDENLY, SAM TRIPS. THE GROUP REVERTS BACK TO HER BUT SUDDENLY SHE’S BEING TACKLED AND BITTEN. NICK STARTS SCREAMING AFTER HER AND KNOCKS THE ZOMBIE OFF OF HER WITH A SHOVEL. HE PICKS HER UP AND MANAGES TO KICK A ZOMBIE AWAY. SUDDENLY THE GROUP IS IN COMBAT, HITTING AND BASHING THE ZOMBIES. CARSON EVEN PUNCHES ONE. AS SOON AS THEY’RE DOWN, THEY RUN FOR THE NEARST SHELTER )

(CUT TO A HOUSE WHERE THEY FIND A WAGON TO PUT SAM IN. THEY TIE UP HER WOUND WITHS SOME OF NICKS SWEATER AND NICK DRAGS HER IN THE WAGON.)

NICK: (PULLS OUT A GRANOLA BAR FROM HIS POCKET.) Here, eat this. (HE HANDS IT TO SAM WHO REFUSES IT.)

MIEL: You know what happens when you take shortcuts in horror movies Nick? You die.

NICK: We’re almost there.

(SAM THEN ABRUPTLY BEGINS TO SCREAM. THEY ALL PAUSE AND RUSH TOWARD HER IN HER WAGON. NICK INSTRUCTS HER TO BREATH AS HE GRABS HER HAND. SAM IS SWEATING AND IS PALE. SHE THEN THROWS UP. NICK TURNS AWAY.)

MIEL: Sam, stay with us.

(NICK NEILS DOWN BESIDE HER AGAIN. MOVES HER HAIR TO THE SIDE. SHE’S SHAKING.)

NICK: Sam, remember freshman year when we met? You had just moved here from Oregon and you were real quite. It was so damn cliche. You were sitting alone at lunch and I came and sat by you. Remember what you told me? (SAM SHAKES HER HEAD YES.) You told me we could never be friends in real life because I was obviously too nerdy. But then you said that because of that, we should be best friends, for a very very long time. (PAUSE.) Sam.

(SHE LOOKS AT HIM AND BEGINS TO CHANGE EXPRESSION AS THE TRANSITION IS HAPPENING.)

NICK: I love you. (NICK CORRESPONDINGLY GRABS THE SHOVEL AND KILLS HER WITH IT, HITTING HER OVER AND OVER AGAIN, BLOOD SPLATTERED EVERYWHERE. HE BREAKS DOWN AND CRYS AFTER THE COMPULSION IS TOO EXAGGERATED. MIEL AND CARSON GO TO EMBRACE HIM. AS THE HOLD EACH OTHER, THE SCENE FADES OUT.)

NICK: (V.O.) That’s when I lost Sam.

(CUT TO FIELD.)

NICK: The house is just over the field.

(SUDDENLY, ZOMBIES COME OVER THE HILL AND CHASE THE GROUP. CARSON GET’S TACKLED AND JUST AS HE’S TRYING TO BEAT THEM OFF, A SHOT LOOKING UP SHOWS THE ZOMBIES FACES AS THEY’RE ATTACKING HIM. BLOOD AND FLESH IN THEIR MOUTHS. THE MASS IS SO BIG THAT THE LIGHT IS FILLED AND THE SCREEN GOES BLACK.)

(CUT TO MIEL AND NICK WHO ARE STILL RUNNING ACROSS THE FEILD. THEY MAKE IT TO THE HOUSE.)

(CUT TO INSIDE THE HOUSE. THEY LOOK ALL OVER. NICK IS YELLING FOR HIS FATHER. HIS FATHER REPLYS. HIS VOICE IS TRACED TO AN UPSTAIRS BEDROOM WHERE STUFF IS BEING MOVED AROUND. THE DOOR OPENS. NICK HUGS HIS FATHER AND THEY ARE RUSHED INSIDE. HIS FATHER HAS A SNIPE SET UP. THEY ARE SAFE.)

(CUT TO NICK INSIDE A ROOM WHERE THERES A COUPLE PEOPLE IN DOCTORS ROBES AND SUCH WHO ARE TAKING NOTES.)

NICK: We waited in that room for a good day or so. Miel posted the address we were at on Facebook since the wifi was surprisingly working but there was no cell reception. We were eventually found by the police and airlifted out of there. That’s really all the happened.

REPORTER: So, the end?

NICK: (SHRUGS.) The end.

THE END
