I've been lucky when I've had plumbing problems as I'm usually home when they happen.
I awoke at 4:30 a.m. when I heard the toilet bowl in my bathroom rush water.  I also heard dripping.  The bathroom floor was soaked.  It kept dripping.  I put a pan where the leak was but noticed there were several leaks.  For four hours I tried to keep the water from leaking out.  I tried to turn the shut up valve and had to use all my might for it to shut off.

I called a plumber who told me that there was a crack in the toilet bowl.  I hadn't noticed it.  If it had gone through instead of hearing water rushing, I would have heard a crash and then water would be spraying all over the place.  The mess would not have been confined to the bathroom floor.

I had to have my toilet replaced. Thankfully my plumber was able to do it on Saturday.

I'd hate to think what would have happened if I wasn't home and the toilet bowl crack had gone thru.  A big mess.
