Free-verse poem wherein the narrator ponders how to escape the troubles of life
I can’t leave myself

I’ve tried

I’ll wander into the woods and hide

I’ll swim in the water

And I won’t resist the tide

I’ll stare with questioning eyes

At the big scary sky

I can’t leave myself

Until I die

I can’t leave myself

I’ve tried

I’ll raise my voice and let out a cry

I’ll grasp for the wind

But, my cupped hands-

There’s nothing inside

I’ll stare with frightened eyes

At the unfeeling sky

But I can’t leave myself

Until I die

I can’t leave myself

I’ve tried

I’ll run away and marry a beautiful bride

She’ll treat me right

And she’ll write me love poems

Because she'll love to write

But it won’t be alright

It will crumble

Get wound too tight

It will fade to black

And wander off at night

I can’t leave myself

I've tried
