Short clip from a short story I'm working on.
Brodan ran his fingers along the petrified trunk dislodging a shower of ash that swirled slowly from the branches to the cold grey earth. The forest was his favorite place to go to think. The skeletal limbs of the stone trees backlit by the broken moons looked like an ocean of hands reaching for the heavens. Tardis the larger moon trailed a slowly shifting contrail of debris caused by the collision of much smaller Mars. The two orbs, one pale and broken the other small and red dancing slowly forever across the ever night. Not a sign of life for miles. True peace. The ground was covered in drifts of falling ash like gray snow piling up against the base of the petrified trees. Occasionally the moon would glint off bits of white bone uncovered by the gentle wind.He played here as a child climbing amongst the trees and searching through the cool ash for hidden treasures. The field below was a charred mass of debris and he come across all kinds of things in his adventures. His father had assembled a small army from the bones of the dead and sent them to the field for Brodan to play with. His mock battles had forts built by skeletal hands and at least 50 clacking soldiers on each side. When they would break or shatter his father would just conjure more. He had memories of being chased through the stone forest by the bones of children his size, hide and seek was more challenging when your opponents didnt have to breathe and could climb like a spider.
