Mephibosheth's Song
MEPHIBOSHETH’S SONG

Upon the plain of Lo Debar

a cripple sits alone.

his name was once of royalty

Now he’s without a home.

Mephibosheth of Great Saul’s loins,

a pauper in the streets

Forsaken by David the King

and cursed with broken feet.

Then late one night the King awoke

Sweat upon David’s brow.

A promise once made rests on his lips,

a youthful, solemn vow

Made to his savior Jonathan,

who lay upon Death’s door,

to care and watch over his kin

now and forever more.

“Ziba!’ he called and his servant

did hasten to his side

“Speak of the heir of Saul the Bad

and tell where he abides!

So I may do that which I swore

and keep him by my side

And fulfill my words to my friend

Who for my life did die.”

“But, my Lord, he is not fit for

this type of honored life!

A man like you shan’t be exposed

To one who might cause strife.

Just turn your back, forget this vow

It was foolishness of youth.

No one knows of your promises

That now seem most uncouth.”

“But God does know, Ziba, my friend

From him nothing can hide.

His word is beyond breakable,

In His word I abide.”

And so it was Saul’s kin did come

to live amongst the King

Was given back Jonathan’s rights

and all his regal things.

A place at King David’s table

given to Saul’s grandson

And with the breaking of the bread

the will of God was done.
