"Pollyanna isn't a medicine, my dear," she said demurely, "--though I have heard some people call her a tonic.  Pollyanna is a little girl."

The story picks up Pollyanna's life when she is 12 or 13 years old.  Over the years Pollyanna has shared a part of her child like thought life which she calls "the Game."  Many people who are acquainted with Pollyanna now play "the Game," with surprising results.

As the reader progresses you will discover Pollyanna's approach to life.  And, you will see as she matures how she learns about the realities of life.  You will see how she views social acceptance of real poverty in the age when the story was written.

The story gives us a view of society in the late 1800's and early 1900's,  This may contrast with what the reader may think in 2013 about the society around us.
