Assignment #1

Patrick Kern

A Day in my Life without Government

This morning I woke up in my bed. I went to the bathroom and used the facilities. If we didn't have a government, I may have had to go outside to do that. If I wanted to take a shower, I may have had to find a creek or a river without the government.

Next I turned on the T.V. and made myself breakfast. The cereal that I ate was FDA approved. The eggs, FDA approved. Without a government, I may have had to hunt for my breakfast. If that were the case, my entire day could be entirely made up of hunting and looking for food. I probably wouldn't get the chance to watch the news.

Almost all the shows on T.V. are all regulated by the F.C.C. There are certain words or images that cannot be said or seen on certain channels. The news channels for the most part are supposed to stay objective, but that doesn't always happen. Either way, someone is paying for all of these productions to be seen, and those that pay, probably want the content of their productions to maintain a certain image and reputation.

After breakfast it's time to drive to school. The government regulates all of the roads that I will drive on. The speed limit, red lights, stop signs, all to keep our roads safe. These have all been implemented by the government. Driving would be a far more dangerous activity without all of the traffic laws that are in place.

I arrive at school with the government to thank for the opportunity. Without financial aid, I would not have the opportunity to continue school and I would be working a full time job somewhere else. In a sense, school is my job, and it is an investment in my future. My financial aid also depends upon my academic progress, so I have to keep up in order to receive the financial and social benefits that education provides. Without the government, the only schooling I would receive would most likely be an elder in my immediate surroundings.

There is a lot of construction at school as well. All of this is permitted through government means. All of the construction on the roads as well. It is an upgrade to our current civilization, and without government approval I doubt that any upgrades would be happening. We would still have dirt roads and live in log cabins without any climate control or water.

While at school I use the facilities there. I drink from the water fountains. All of these things wouldn't be available without government guidance. The food and cafeteria areas, all need to receive certain permits and licenses in order to operate. This isn't only at school, but everywhere. Any restaurant I eat at will need to meet certain regulations in order to operate and stay in business. Without the government, a lot of restaurants would probably be very dirty and there would probably be more people getting sick from the food that they eat.

When I go to the gym, the gym needs permits and licenses to be open and in business. Without the government the only workout I would be getting would consist of hunting and cutting down trees.

At the end of the day, it's time to relax and maybe do some homework before bed. Without the government, I would definitely be finding a way to relax, though it may not be as easy if I was living in a place without heat. I might have to build a fire. All in all, the government makes our lives easier and simpler, even with all the drama and politics involved.
