Kittens are fun. They are full of surprises.

No! No! Elmer!

My son asked for a cat when he was thirteen. He was not working to his potential in middle school. I told him if his grades needed to improve. Then we could get a kitten. Well his grades and behavior improved. One brisk morning we arrived at the Lakewood Animal Shelter.  They have lots of cats, kittens mostly.  The selection began; rows and rows of kittens. Most of the kittens were either sleeping or not paying any attention to the people watching them. Elmer however, was standing up and showing off. He was a orange and yellow kitten. We adopted him because he was so curious.

Elmer could not resist fabric softener sheets. Even when he was a full grown cat. So, I always had to watch out out,  because he would pounce on my clean laundry.

I purchased a small tree. It fit perfectly under the fireplace. As my son and I left the apartment. He said, "Take a picture of the tree it is very pretty"  Well, I put it off. Little did we know! We came home to a mangled, shredded tree. Elmer was rolling around in the mess. He seemed very proud of himself.

One evening as I was preparing dinner I dropped a bag of frozen peas. They scattered everywhere. Elmer jumped into the peas and rolled around.  He tossed them into the air with glee.

We enjoyed Elmer for many years. He became a very good cat. I will always miss him. Unlike humans he never lost his sense of fun.
