On March 8th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Zaharie awoke early in the morning knowing the day was going to be long and the night even longer. The past year has been very troublesome for Zaharie. He was having relationship problems with his wife when she suspected him of having an affair, and she finally decided to move out of the family's home the day before. As if that wasn't enough he was scheduled to pilot the red-eye flight to Beijing in his job as a commercial pilot for the Malaysian airlines. Zaharie had a busy day ahead of him before his flight .Most importantly, he had to be at the courthouse at 9am where his friend Anwar Ibahim was going to be in court. Zaharie met Anwar several years ago at a family gathering, since he is related to Anwar's daughter in law. Zaharie and Anwar became very close friends as both were members of the Malaysian opposition party, and Anwar had risen to a leadership role in the party. When Zaharie arrived at the courthouse, the room was packed, mostly with supporters of the opposition party. Zaharie stood up when the jude came in to read the verdict. After hearing the judge sentence Anwar to five years in prison for homosexuality-illegal in Malaysia, Zaharie lowered his head undoubtedly upset with the sentence his close friend had received. After awakening from a nap, Zaharie started to pack his belongings for his flight. He noticed he had received a text from a woman friend of his. Again, he became visible shaken after reading the text and tried to call her but couldn't connect. |
