Insect Imagery Part 1 (a Sonnet)



We call them names like "nasty buggers", "pests".

But Shakespeare must have watched and learned their ways.

Consider with me, and analyze the best

of insect imagery in Shakespeare's famous plays.



Distinguish foolish acts from real bravery --

Search no more for a phrase you can rely on.

The truth's exposed with: "That's a valiant flea

that dare eat his breakfast on the lip of a lion!"*



The butt of all jokes? You want to have a fit?

Or would you prefer for this clown a more classic retort?

Then take a page from Shakespeare's caustic wit:

"When the sun shines, let foolish gnats make sport!"**
