Sandra and I were best friends in High School. It has been probably about 20 years since I have spoken with her. Now I'm looking at my Facebook Page, and she has a request for me to be her friend. Of course, I'm a little shocked to see her request, but I know if someone wants to find you there is no better way than Facebook. I am really curious to hear about her life after high school. I acknowledge her request and wait for her to write back.
I started Mt.Pleasant High September of 1964. The whole idea of being in High School was exciting and intimidating. I looked forward to the new friends I would make and especially the boys I would date. I also looked forward to the new classes and what I would learn. Learning new concepts was always so exciting to me.
Sandra came into Room 111 about 3 weeks after classes started. I could see that she felt self conscious being the new girl in school. She took her long dark brown hair and covered her face with it. I said, "Hi, how are you?" She replied that she
was uncomfortable and that she didn't know anyone. "That's okay, if we have the same lunch you can sit with me." We both went off to our classes and when lunch time came around she came over to my table.
Wanting to know more about her I asked her what school she attended. "Oh, I went to Johnston High, but my mom remarried and now I live with her and my step dad in Providence." "I hate this new student stuff.." "Wish I could just get this day over with." She seemed very anxious.
To reassure her I said, 'Don't worry, I have gone to school with a lot of these kids, and I'll introduce you to them." She seemed to be leary of my willingness to introduce her to my friends.
Sandra was short, about 4 feet 10 inches, and very small boned and petite. She seemed to have a lot of energy. When she spoke about herself she would tell me that she felt awful about her big nose. She did have an Italian straight nose, but I told her it was not big. Boy was she self-conscious.
After a few weeks of talking to her she invited me to her house. I met her mom and Step Dad. They were nice and very welcoming to me. She lived close enough to my apartment so it was easy for us to get together.
We saw a poster for a dance that was happening on Friday Night. It was a pep-rally Dance to celebrate the Mt. Pleasant Football Team. Sandra's step dad dropped us off and picked us up after the dance. I introduced her to all the kids I knew. The boys asked us to dance, and we had a good time.
