A quirky tale about a "normal" day. Really rhyming couplets cast into 4 line AABB verses |
ANOTHER WORKING DAY I yawn and stretch and scratch my head Reluctant, tumble out of bed Then coffee! Ah, the cup that cheers Better than a dozen beers. I read the paper, groan and curse Could the news be any worse? The funnies ease away the pain And set me for the day again. I kiss my wife a fond adieu Then hurry for the transport queue The bus is running late today Well, when it does, why should I pay? Still, rules are rules, avoid a fight Cough up the cash, just do it right I’m in on time—that’s a relief Say “Good morning” to the chief. Settle in my office chair My case notes are already there Starting with a brand new client Help him be more self-reliant Write up the notes, now that’s a bore I have to see another four Talks with colleagues, letters, notes Ring suppliers for their quotes. Take a break and rush my lunch ‘He won’t turn up now’ that’s my hunch Back to work and, yes, he’s here Take it slowly, make things clear Finish my routine by five Check to see I’m still alive Hurry for the early bus Which, if I miss, there’ll be a fuss. Greet my wife; she’s looking great But teaching keeps her rather late I help her make the evening meal She boils and bakes, I chop and peel. The meal all done, now relaxation Turn TV to another station But nothing there to stimulate Give it away, it’s getting late. And so to bed, we’ve done it right That makes a change, an early night Sleep comes quickly, then the dreams Everything not what it seems. Tomorrow is another day Time for work and time for play Into each life a little rain Brother, here we go again. |
